Former Atlantic Man, Father of Gov. Bushfield, Dead
John A. Bushfield, 83, pioneer resident of Miller, S.D.,
father of Gov. Harlan J. Bushfield of that state and former
Atlantic printer, died late Wednesday of complications which
followed a broken hip suffered in a fall six weeks ago.
Born in Ohio, Aug. 9, 1856, Mr. Bushfield came to Iowa when a
young man and in 1878 began work as a printer on the old Atlantic
Telegraph, of which the late Sen. Lafe Young was publisher.
While employed here, he was married to Cora Pearson, daughter of
Richard Pearson, who operated a livery stable in Atlantic a
number of years ago. Mrs. Bushfield preceded her husband in death
15 years ago.
The Bushfields homesteaded in Hand county, South Dakota, in 1883
and subsequently moved to Miller, where Mr. Bushfield was editor
of the Miller Press for more than 40 years. He was also
formerly postmaster at Miller under the administrations of
Presidents McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt and was a colorful and
dominant personality in the early history of that section of
South Dakota.
Surviving besides Gov. Bushfield are two daughters, Miss Dollie,
of Miller and Mrs. E.J. Hoffman of St. Paul; four grandchildren
and two great grandchildren. Burial will be at Miller.
Bull Creek Savage to End
Savage old Bull creek, being covered north from Second
street by WPA workers, made one last revolt against being
harnessed and this morning held the county caterpillar tractor
captive within its muddy banks for several hours. The
"cat" was being used in filling over a culvert when it
slipped into the ditch and became mired. Bull creek, starting at
the southeast outskirts of Atlantic and running through the
business district, has long been a source of trouble and with
every heavy rain, overflows its banks, flooding streets and
basements of buildings adjacent to it.
