Vernon A. Voss, Denison, Listed As A Casualty
Private Vernon A. Voss, whose mother, Mrs. Minnie Voss
lives on route No. 8, Denison, is listed among thirteen Iowans
killed in action in a casualty list announced by the War
Department, according to an Associated Press dispatch. Mr. Voss
was killed in the southwest Pacific.
The Associated Press report, issued under a Washington dateline,
follows: Eleven of the men, including one officer, were killed in
Africa and two were killed in the southwest Pacific.
Following is the list of Iowans killed in Africa:

Sgt. Otto P. Boettcher, mother is Mrs. Emma A. Boettcher, Storm

Pvt. Leland P. Christensen, mother is Mrs. Edith M. Christensen

Sgt. Noah J. Davis, wife is Mrs. Frances K. Davis, route 3,
Centerville.
Sgt. Paul M. Denison, father is George E. Denison, route 3,
Atlantic;
Pfc. Melvin J. Goecke, wife is Mrs. Loretta Goecke (615 No.
Eighth street) Estherville;
Sgt. Stanford S. Johnston, wife is Mrs. Doris S. Johnston, Box 3,
Bridgewater;
Sgt. Robert J. Kliegl, father is John A. Kliegl, route 1, Osgood;
Corp. Henry H. Ohlendorf, father is Henry H. Olendorf, route 1,
Marcus;
Corp. Ben B. Sanford, father is Wilford A. Sanford, (29 Fifth

Sgt. Leon D. Stipe, mother is Mrs. Mabel Stipe, Clarinda.
Killed in Southwest Pacific:
Donald J. Carpenter, mother is Mrs. Hilda M. Carpenter, route 2,
Estherville;
The War Departments national list also included Pvt. Harold
J. Doecher of Beemer, Neb., whose mothers address is route
1, Beemer. He was killed in Africa.

The first section of the Service Honor Roll, which was dedicated on January 8, 1943, at a special assembly, contains the names of 321 former students and alumni of Carroll high school. Sixteen names were omitted from the first section of the roll through a mistake. These and twenty-three others are ready to be placed on another plaque, which is now under construction.

GOLD STARS ADDED: LIPSMAN, JOHANNSEN Two more gold stars will be placed on the service honor roll roster. Charles Johannsen was reported missing on Dec. 7, 1941. His death was confirmed recently. Sam Lipsman was reported killed in an airplane crash accident last week. Both attended Carroll high school for about one semester each and were residents of Carroll county, the latter having lived in Dedham. Two gold stars were added to the first plaque honoring Walter Neumayer and Nick Vasos, who gave their lives since Pearl Harbor. |
