Obituary.
Katherine Kyle was born in Grant county, Wisconsin, April 28,
1865, and came to Butler county with her parents a few years
later where she grew to beautiful young womanhood. She attended
the rural schools until she had finished their course, later
attended the High School in Greene and a Sister's School in
Ackley, fitting herself for a teacher. Being of a deeply
religious nature, after teaching a few terms of school she
severed the home ties and went to St. Louis where she entered St.
Mary's Convent and became a Sister of Charity a year or so later.
Sister Helen as she has since been known, has been a sufferer
from lung trouble for a number of years and having a tender
compassion for those similarly afflicted about 15 years ago she
founded a home for consumptives. Purchasing a large building and
a small plot of ground, she has succeeded in providing a home and
has given care in the suburbs of St. Louis to numberless
unfortunate ones who were suffering from that disease. About two
weeks ago a telegram was received by her relatives bearing the
sad news that she could live but a short time at the best and for
some of them to come at once. Her brother John Kyle left the same
night for St. Louis and for a few days letters of slight
encouragement were received by the relatives, but on Friday, Feb.
2, a telegram was received that she had passed peacefully away at
1:30 p.m. She leaves to mourn her departure her aged mother, six
brothers and three sisters all living at or near the Kyle
homestead in Benezette township. The sympathy of the entire
community goes out to them in their sorrow, this being the second
death to occur in this most estimable family in less than a year.
