Local Mention
-Rev. H. Bredow was a caller in Waverly Wednesday.
-W.E. Davis has been laid up the past week with a
"game" knee.
-The Royal Neighbors met Tuesday afternoon at the residence of
Mrs. L. Garden.
-Will Harms and Albert Wolfgram returned home Tuesday from a
week's stay in Frederika.
-Mrs. O.R. Aubrey and two children went to Oelwein Tuesday to
visit relatives for a week or so.
-Will and Ida Hurmence went to Bismark, North Dak., to take up a
homestead a piece. Land agent Engleman accompanied them.
-P.H. Schlatter's babe is on the sick list.
-Miss Stella McConkey went to Milwaukee Tuesday afternoon to take
the nurse's course in the Milwaukee hospital.
Will Shucknecht is making arrangements to start a hardware store
in D. Dwyer & Co's old stand, which will be vacated by Mr.
Krieger, who has an option on the Sloan store on the corner and
likely will move into it.
Chris Schiffel, aged 86 years, father of Mrs. F.H. Frank, died at
his home in Charles City Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Frank and Mr.
and Mrs. J.L. Frank went yesterday to attend the funeral.
The storm of January 29th blew down several windmills in south
eastern Banks; one for G. Reif, one for A.E. Fridly, one for
Frank Pagel and one for F. Bartels and one for John Edel.
Death of an Old Soldier
A.A. Orvis, an old soldier from near Sumner, died at the
Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown on Saturday. He was about 70 years
old and had only been at the Home since last September. One
brother, Samuel, near Sumner, survives.
