Mr. and Mrs. R. Stevenson, of Sims, N. Dak., were in Sumner last
week visiting with relatives and friends.
Mrs. Edward Ryan of Bradford, Pa., spent last week here visiting
her sister, Mrs. P. Harvey.
John Lantow, tenant on A.D. Allen's place, has bought I.
Parrott's farm in Banks, to which he will move next month.
Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Reed have disposed of their Cherokee property
and have returned to Sumner to make their home.
Harley Wescott and wife returned Sunday morning from a week at
the fair.
A.D. Allen and wife and Mrs. Alf. Countryman went to the fair
last Thursday night.
Jas. G. Fiester, assisted by three Fayette masons, began laying
brick on Ed. Parrott's new building Monday.
Charley Ladwig, John Smith, Will Krause and wife, John Stevenson
and wife, and Mrs. R. Stevenson started Saturday night for the
fair.
John Harvey, North Dakota, made his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.
Harvey, a short visit last week while on the way to the world's
fair. He will stop for a visit on his return.
Rev. N.F. Norton, the Methodist pastor for the ensuing year,
arrived last week, driving from his last work, Shellsburg, a
Cedar Rapids suburb, via Independence, where he visited his
mother, a resident of that vicinity. His household goods were
shipped on the B.C. R. & N. via Oelwein. Rev. Norton is a
young man, a graduate of the Upper Iowa University in 1891, and
has a family consisting of a wife, a girl five years old and a
boy nine months old. He preached twice from the M.E. pulpit in
this place last Sunday to a full house, and once at Westgate.
Last Friday night's delegation to the fair included Mrs. Wm.
Dawson, Mrs. C.W. Pennington, Mrs. Jacob Haag, Westley Lease and
wife, Robt. Lease, Fred BAney and wife, and Albert Weston and
wife.
The annual camp-fire of Bent Post was held last night. C.A.
Mohling, of Warren Twp., was a caller last evening while here to
attend the G.A.R. entertainment.
Richard Stephens and his sister Anne, left Sunday night to visit
the world's fair.
May Muffly went to the world's fair last Friday, being joined at
South Freeport by an aunt.
V. Munger and F. Wells went to the fair last night.
Father Hogan left Sunday night for the world's fair.
C. Carpenter and wife left last night for the world's fair.
Miss Maggie Delubery returned from the world's fair Saturday.
Born to Mr. J.B. Thomas, Oct. 18th, a boy.
L. Hallowell and daughter Susie went to the world's fair Monday
night.
C.W. Tibbitts has put a fine steam heating plant into his
residence.
L.S. Owen is back from a trip to Texas.
Christ Pepho and his brother Christopher, Wm. Messwarb, Fred
Leyh, and Al Fridley all departed for the world's fair Monday
night.
Mrs. Furrow, mother of Will Furrow at Tripoli and Sam Furrow,
recently sent to the Independence insane asylum, committed
suicide by hanging at her home at Waterloo last Saturday.
WESTGATE.
People are still going and returning from the Fair. R.
Malie and E.M. Keiron went last night.
Mrs. Henry Dohel and son who were visiting at P.H. Winegar's went
to Minneapolis last Friday.
Jas. Stewart Sr., is at the White City taking in the fair and
visiting relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. H. Smith of Emerson, Ohio, are visiting at N.
Spears' she being a cousin of Mrs. Spears.
Fred Fadley's little son is very sick; they had a council of
doctors Monday.
