Placed in Death Row
Elmer Brewer and Patrick Griffin, who murdered Deputy Sheriff
W.F. Dilworth and who have been sentenced to hang on January
26th, 1934, were taken to Fort Madison penitentiary last Tuesday
by Sheriff H.T. Wagner, Waterloo detective Hugh Crumrine, and
Supervisor W. H. Bell. The two criminals have been placed in
"death row" to await execution.
The verdict passed in the trials of these two outlaws is the
first time a death sentence has been made in the history of Black
Hawk county. Sheriff Wagner will be called upon to spring the
trap for Elmer Brewer as part of his official duties; H.M.
Mitchell, deputy sheriff who was with Dilworth when the latter
met his death and who was also shot by Brewer and Griffin, has
asked the privilege of springing the trap for Griffin.
