Plainfield Builds Monument to Those Who Served in War
Plainfield, Ia. - Services of men from this community in the
World War will be commemorated in a monument of native rock and
concrete which is under construction in Plainfield city park. The
structure will have an eight foot square base and will be 16 feet
high, with flag pole in addition. The text of the inscription
will be decided later. The memorial is being promoted by F.C.
Gallagher and other citizens.
Supply Minister at Brown Church Weds 8 Couples
Nashua, Ia., Aug 21 - Five marriage ceremonies were read Monday
at Little Brown Church in the Vale by Rev. Wiliam Kent of Cedar
Rapids, who is supplying as pastor of the famous Congregational
shrine following the resignationand departure of Rev. J.L.
McCorison, Jr. The couples who took vows were:
Delbert C. Schultz, Guernsey, Ia. and Chelya A. Mohr, Victory,
Ia.
Edwin Eabeen and Ione Lindsey, Leon, Kan.
Ormond S. Johnson, Rockford, Ill and Bessie M. Crose, Chicago

Two weddings took place Sunday:
Delbert Luitjens and Anna Nederhoff, both of Wellsburg
Parml Johnston, LaCrosse, Wis. and Sophia Ruehl, Dubuque
Saturday, Elmer Lorenzen of Buckingham and Ada Harnish, of Grundy
Center, were married.
Cedar Falls Man Dies Unexpectedly at Shell Rock
Cedar Falls, Aug 21 - Fred L. Smith of this palce died of a heart
attack last evening while a guest at the home of a daughter, Mrs.
Allen Brogue, in Shell Rock, where he had gone early in the
afternoon. The body has been brought to Brown chapel here to
await arrangements for the funeral. Mr. Smith was 71 years old.
He is survived by Mrs. Brogue and two other daughter, Mrs. Earl
Miller and Mrs. Anton Andreasen, both of this place. Three
brothers and a sister also survive: Orville and Jay Smith, Shell
Rock; Mrs. C.E. Emerson, Cedar Falls, and Courtney Smith, Bowling
Green, Ky.
Fisher Funeral Held at Hampton
Hampton, Ia, Aug 21 - The funeral of Martin Fisher, who was
fatally injured in an automobile collision Sunday afternoon, was
conducted today. Rev. Ralph H. Collis conducted the service at
1:30 p.m. in the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Fisher succumbed
early Monday to injuries suffered when his machine was overturned
in a cross-roads crash with a car operated by Ralph Marken. No
inquest was held. Miss Alice Fisher, who suffered the fracture of
three ribs in the same collision, is making good recovery.
Sentenced to Jail
Elkader, Ia., Aug 21 - Joe Blodgett, who terrorized Garnavillo by
brandishing a revolver and uttering threats in a rampage about
the busines section Monday evening, is serving a 30-day sentence
in the county jail. He had hearing before Justice of the Peace,
D.E. Gleason on charge of pointing a gun at persons. A liquor
charge probably will be filed later, officers said.
Former Lawn City Residents Meet by Chance
Cedar Falls, Aug 21 - Three former residents of this city are
holding a chance reunion here this week, having come to visit
relatives or friends here. Frank Wyth, Minneapollis, is at the
home of his brother, George; Michael Hart of Chicago is visiting
his sister, Mrs. Leon Carney, and Fred Vance of Forest Lake,
Minn., is calling on former associates in the old Cedar Falls
Gazette composing room, where he one was foreman.

-Rev. B.A. Jennings preached at the United Brethren church her
Sunday as substitute for the pastor, Rev. S.A. Birdsall, who is
assisting Rev. A.L. Hope of Wisconsin in a revival at Garden
Prairie.
-A miscellaneous gift shower at the John Corkery home Saturday
was complimentary to Miss Nica Fay, who was married to John
Corkery Monday.
-A group of Wadena people attended the birthday dinner for H.W.
Bishop at his home near West Union Sunday.

The Marshall Canning company will start its 1929 pack here
Thursday. About 200 persons will be employed.
Oelwein Items
-"Four Square Gospel" tent meeting open tonight at the
corner of West Charles street and Second avenue southwest, and
will continue with Mr. and Mrs. G.H. Buhler in charge.
-Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Fee will return to Waterloo to make their
home. Fee came here a few years ago to manage a cigar store,
later going into the insurance business.
-Charles Ridler has just returned from an extensive automobile
tour thru Iowa, Illinois and Missouri.
-A.C. Zell, manager of the J.C. Penney store, has purchased the
R.S. Glenn residence, corner First avenue and Third street
northeast, and will make extensive alterations before occupying.
-Mrs. Blanch Wright has purchased the J.F. Carland home on Fifth
avenue southwest.
-The funeral for Mrs. George Hains was held today at Stockton,
Ill, and burial was at Stockton. The Hains' lived here for many
years, and quite a number from here attended the last services.
-Chief of Police W.B. Stone returned Monday night from Sioux
City, bringing C. Barnes, who is accused of passing a forged
check bearing the name of W.R. Shipman, at the J.C. Penny store
here.
-Steve Zolyniski, Jack Knapp and Edward Donohue are with the Boy
Scouts at Camp Ingawanis.
Charles City Items
-The body of R. Anderson who died Monday at the home of his son,
David, three miles south of the city, was taken to LeRoy, Ill,
for interment.
-Fred Wady was found dead in bed Sunday morning at the Floyd
county home and the body was taken to Rockford for burial. His
sister, a resident of Greene, too charge of the body.
-Births reported: Dr. and Mrs. McCloud of Greene, are the parents
of a daughter born in Cedar Valley hospital, and a daughter was
born yesterday to Mr. and Mrs. Fate. Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Daasch
of Second avenue have a daughter, born Saturday.
Buchanan co. Farm Suffers Heavy Fire Losses
Littleton, Ia. - Damage estimated at $10,000 was caused on the
farm of L.E. Minton, two miles north of here, Tuesday afternoon
by fire which started from the blower pipe when straw was being
placed in the mow. The barn, valued at $6,000 when erected in
1912, was lost with all contents, including 60 tons of clover
hay, two stallions, a pony, several young pigs, harness and other
equipment. A silo and several small buildings in the vicinity of
the barn also were destroyed.
Former Banker at Nashua Joins Staff of Oliver Company
Nashua, Ia, Aug 21 - W.F. Getsch, former banker here and more
recently traveling representative for a Minneapolis concern, has
accepted a position as collector for Oliver Farm Equipment
company. He will have headquarters in North Dakota or Montana.
Mr. Getsch was associated with Commercial State bank of Nashua 30
years.
Funeral of Mrs. H.O. Wiltse of Manchester to be on
Thursday
Manchester, Ia, Aug 21 - Mrs. H.O. Wiltse, 77, a resident of Iowa
and this community for 75 years, died at her home on East
Prospect street Monday at 2:30 p.m. She had been in uncertain
health 11 years. She broke her hip three years ago, fell at her
home May 25 last and broke the member again, was taken to an Iowa
City hospital May 31, and remained there until one month ago.
Services will be at her home Thursday at 1 p.m., later services
to be at the church at Wood, Ia., at 2:30, in charge of Rev. E.D.
Wells of Dubuque, formerly of Manchester. Burial will be in
Asbury cemetery near Wood. The pallbearers will be her four
nephews and two sons, as follows: Spencer Fleming, Spencer, Ia.;
Perry Fleming, Edgewood; Walter Rizer, Randalia; James Rizer,
Robinson; James Leonard Wiltse, Strawberry Point, and Luther O.
Wiltse, Manchester.
Nancy A. Fleming was born in Pennsylvania, March 15, 1852. She
came to Iowa with her parents when 2 years of age and settled
near Colesburg. A few years later her parents bought a farm eight
miles northeast of Edgewood. She taught in the rural schools for
seven years, did dressmaking for two years, and was married to
H.O. Wiltse Sept. 14, 1879, at the home of her brother, James
Fleming, eight miles northeast of Edgewood. Had she lived until
Sept 14, she would have celebrated her golden wedding
anniversary. She joined the Methodist church at the age of 11 and
was a member of the Rebekah order. She is survived by her husband
and the two sons named.
