Well Known Farmer Dead - Oscar Purdy Passed Away at His Home Early Last Night.
At his home in Spring Creek township, about 8 miles east of this city, last night at 7:00 o'clock occurred the death of Oscar Purdy, one of the oldest and best known residents of that locality. The deceased had been in poor health for sometime and his death did not come unexpected to his relatives and close friends, although until only a few days ago was he compelled to take to his bed. Mr. Purdy was about 73 years of age and had lived in Spring Creek township for many years, and his death will be deplored by all who knew him. He is survived by his widow and one son, Floyd Purdy. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Wesleyan Emmanuel church and burial will be made in the family lot at the Spring Creek cemetery. [see June 28th issue for obit]

Were Married at Waterloo Yesterday
A marriage which will be of interest to the younger people of this community, is that of Miss Helen Sheffler and Clarence Thiele. The service was read Wednesday afternoon in the parsonage of Grace Methodist church in Waterloo by the pastor, Dr. roy Leslie Smith, at two o'clock. The witnesses to the ceremony were Mr. and Mrs. George C. Thiele. Miss ruth Wilder and Walter Johannsen, all of this place. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clate Sheffler and has always lived in this vicinity. During the past year she has been a student in the La Porte City high school. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Thiele, ease of town, and has spent the greater part of his life near here. He is engaged in farming. For the present the happy couple will make their home with the parents of the groom.

Family Picnic and Reunion
The twenty-first annual picnic and reunion of the McQuilkin family was held in one of the buildings at the Dairy Cattle Congress grounds, Waterloo, last Thursday. One hundred six persons, descendants of eight brothers and cousins, who settled in Black Hawk and Benton counties, were in attendance. A picnic dinner was served at noon and was followed by a program which included talks by Miss Alice Bigler, of Wadena, who is teaching in Tennessee, and Miss Helene Snyder, who is taking a course in professional nursing in the university hospital in Iowa City. Readings were given by Mrs. J. Paul Vincent, of Hanover, Ia. The following officers were chosen for the ensuing year: Pres., J.Paul Vincent of Hanover, Ia.; Vice Pres., Roy Woodley, of Clarion; Sec'y, George Banger, of La Porte City; Treas., Mrs. C.T. Fuller, of Cedar FAlls; Historian, Mrs. Mildred Giffen, of Iowa City.

Obituary of C.O. Purdy
Charles Oscar Purdy, the youngest child of Olive and Mary Purdy, was born in Clayton County, Iowa, December 8, 1853. He departed this life June 20, 1928, age 74 years, 6 months and 12 days. He had two brothers and one sister, all of whom preceded him in death. In his boyhood he came with his parents to Black Hawk county. On December 8, 1880, he was united in marriage to Laura Belle Weaver. To this union were born two children, Floyd Purdy of La Porte City, Iowa and Mrs. Josie Broad who preceded her father in death February 14, 1920.

C.O. Purdy and wife moved to their present home in March, 1881, and here resided the remainder of his days excepting one year spent in Missouri. He was a kind, devoted husband and father, a good neighbor and always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be greatly missed by family, neighbors and friends whom God has seen fit to leave behind. He leaves to mourn his widow, one son and six grandchildren besides many other relatives and friends. In all his married life before the illness that caused his death, he was never confined to his bed in sickness. Funeral services were held by Rev. Albert and Melvina Johnson at Emanuel chapel Friday at 2:00 p.m. Interment was made in the family lot at Spring Creek cemetery.
