Obituary --- J. J. Baker
Mr. J.J. Baker was born in Michigan, April 17, 1818. He was
married to Eliza Jane Taylor, the 13th of March 1842. They lived
in Michigan about ten years after their marriage and then moved
to Illinois. The family lived there a few years and then moved
from Illinois to Iowa in 1855, settling in and near Cedar Falls.
Mr. Baker has lived in and near Cedar Falls ever since. He was
one of the oldest pioneers of this county and came to Cedar Falls
when there was only a post office and a few other buildings. He
had to go to Dubuque and Iowa City for his provisions. Mrs. Baker
died 6 years ago last March. Since then he made it his home with
his children. Four children were born to their union, one son and
three daughters, all of whom survive him. All were at his
bedside, except the son who is in Oregon. The daughters are Mrs.
John Call, Miss Emmaretta Baker, Mrs. G.H. Thompson. Mr. Baker
was of a large family of children. The only one left is his
sister, Mrs. Daniel Whitesell, and her son, J.W. Whitesell.
