Clark Griffen Hurt
A sudden and serious mishap befell Mr. Clark Griffen,
while helping thresh at Mr. Frank Navratil's last Saturday
afternoon. He was backing a team to load up, when they became
frightened, plunged, and started to run away. Mr. Griffen was
able to get hold of a hitch rein, and tried to stop them. But he
was unable to check them or bring them under control. Instead,
they threw him to the ground, breaking his shoulder. It is the
second misfortune within a short time and Mr. Griffen has the
sympathy of a multitude of friends and acquaintances.
Hoover Family Escape Serious Injury
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hoover, accompanied by their son and
daughter, Chris and Ellowene, escaped serious injury by a close
margin in an auto accident Sunday. They were on their way to
attend service at the Baptist Church in Greeley Township, when,
in trying to avoid a bad place in the road, they swung out
against a bank with such force that all four occupants of the car
were thrown out. Mrs. Hoover was quite badly bruise, though no
bones were broken. Miss Ellowene was scratched about the face.
Neither of the men was injured in the least.
Wedding Bells
Mr. Jens Christensen of Adair, Iowa, and Miss Olga
Johannes Jensen were married at the home of the bride's parents,
seven miles southeast of Exira, Wednesday, August 7, 1912, Rev.
John Harned of the Methodist Church of Exira officiating.
The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Christensen who
reside four miles east of Adair and is an energetic young farmer
who will always make good wherever he may be. The bride is a
daughter Mr. and Mrs. Niels Jensen. She is a very intelligent
young woman.
The bride was dressed in a blue messaline silk dress, while the
groom wore conventional black. The immediate relatives were
present.
The couple will be at home after September first to their many
friends on the groom's father's farm four miles east of Adair.
The Journal extends congratulations to the happy couple
and wishes them happiness and prosperity through their married
life.
OAKFIELD and BRAYTON
Peter Beck was on the sick list last week.
Miss Agnes Miller returned Saturday from her Anita visit.
Mrs. B.M. Gross went to Exira Tuesday to visit her sister, Mrs.
E. Gross.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Andersen are the proud parents of a bright
baby girl.
J.F. Jensen and family went to Lewis Sunday for a few days outing
at Crystal Lake.
Ralph Goodwin who is working near Anita spent Sunday with his
wife and baby in Brayton.
Mildred Dimick of Atlantic is visiting this week at the home of
her grandfather, D.B. Beers.
Mrs. Lewis Heath returned to her home in Atlantic Friday after a
week's visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Freeman
B.O. Spilman of Bloomfield, Iowa, was in Brayton Friday. He will
teach in the upper room of the Oakfield School this year. Gladys
Chamberlain will teach in the lower room and Miss Vivian Bartlett
will be the teacher at Brayton.
Nis Larson & Son are building a new addition to their meat
market.
Emiel Fries went to South Dakota last week to take a look at the
country.
Mrs. John Johnson, mother of Mr. Ingvad Birk, has been quite ill
with rheumatism.
Dr. Koob was called to Lorah last week to see Mr. Green, who is
suffering with lumbago.
Howard Herrick of McIntosh, S. Dakota, was visiting his parents,
J.E. Herrick and wife last week. He returned to that city Friday,
accompanied by his brother, Edison, who will remain there the
balance of the summer.
HAMLIN
Tom Mardesen was in Hamlin last Saturday in his new auto.
Peter Jensen traded for a fine bay team of horses last week.
Soren Aagaard of west of Exira visited his folks here last
Sunday.
Olga Gerloff from near Elk Horn visited friends in Hamlin last
week.
Chris Lang purchased a new top buggy of Nels Mortensen last
Saturday.
Rasmussen Johnson visited with friends in the northern part of
the state last week.
Otto Lauritsen, our barber, sold ten gallon of ice cream last
Saturday and Sunday.
Mike Nissen and Jens Mikkelsen were in Brayton last Saturday
night visiting friends.
Victor Nelsen has bought a ninety dollar camera. He says he can
take some fine pictures now.
Those who attended the ball game in Exira last Sunday were Andrew
Hansen, Willie Rattenborg Nels J. Jensen,, George Gude, Einer
Rasmussen, Chris Jorgensen and Jimmie Olsen.
AUDUBON
F.O. Nicklason went to Dedham, Friday, on business.
A.P. Anersen went to Atlantic, Monday, on business.
Ella M. Stearnes went to Exira, Sunday, to visit friends.
John Parnham returned Saturday from a visit in Cedar Rapids.
Claus Thompson went to Atlantic Tuesday on business.
Lillian and George Foley went to Dexter Thursday to visit.
Levi Kopp went to Des Moines Thursday to take treatment.
Will Hughes went to Templeton, Thursday, to visit relatives.
Mrs. H.J. Hoogennakker spent Saturday in Atlantic with friends.
Howard and Lake Ulrich returned home Saturday from a visit in
Omaha.
Miss Anna Jensen went to Casey Saturday to visit with her sister.
William Armstrong came from Peetz, Colorado, Friday on business.
Charles Armstrong returned to Peetz, Colorado, Friday, after a
visit here.
Clara and Val Leonard went to Davenport Friday to visit their
sister.
Mrs. Merle Rippey returned home Saturday from a visit in Carson
with her parents.
Al Hurd departed Wednesday for California where he will go to
visit relatives.
L.S. Bridenstine returned home Saturday from a business trip to
South Dakota.
Fannie Brainard returned home Saturday from Cedar Falls, where
she had been attending College.
Miss Marie Harris returned to her home in Atlantic Monday after a
visit here at the Otie Harris home.
A linen shower was give at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Will Coyne,
Monday evening, in honor of Miss Hazel Law, who is to be married
in the near future.
Mrs. Margaret Brown, who had been in Des Moines making her home
with her son, arrived in Audubon Wednesday to make her home with
her daughter, Mrs. W.R. Green.
KIMBALLTON
Isaac Terkelsen has bought a new R.C.H. car from M.N. Esebek.
Paul Bjern has sold his farm to Hans Nissen for $175. per acre.
Peter Jorgensen and Goldie Thomsen celebrated their birthdays
Monday, August 5th.
Edna Faaborg and Lena Therkelsen celebrated their birthdays
Wednesday July 31.
Mrs. Jens Larsen and Mrs. Mads Madsen celebrated their birthdays
Friday August 2.
O. Hortel has moved his family into the house formerly occupied
by K.J. Pedersen.
Olga Olsen returned Monday from Cedar Falls to teach the Danish
Summer School here the coming three months. Johanne Bjorn is
engaged to teach the primary school.
VIOLA VIOLETS
The infant child of Will Johnson is very sick at this writing.
Hans Christensen purchased a horse from Mr. Bilmire last week.
Henry Schrader and family spent Sunday at the Will Horning home.
Hans Jensen is going with the Henry Johansen thresh rig this
fall.
Ed Baldwin, wife and daughter, Ilene, spent Sunday at the J. Crow
home.
F.C. Miller of Audubon is helping Ira and Al Miller stack their
grain.
Phil Crow, who has been in the hospital in Council Bluffs,
returned home last Thursday.
ELK HORN
Sorn Veddum was a business visitor in Atlantic Saturday.
Oscar Brown received a new grain separator one day last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hanson left here Saturday for a visit to the
old country.
J.C. Johnson and family were guests at the Andrew Henningsen home
Sunday evening.
Miss Gertie Sorensen left here Tuesday for the Fred Anderson home
in Hamlin, where she will work for sometime.
P. Hoegh and family attended the funeral of the late John Larson,
who was buried at the Oakhill Cemetery, last week.
Mr. P. Axelson and family spent a pleasant day at the home of her
daughter Mrs. Henry C. Anderson and family last Saturday.
Rass Nissen took Rasmus Hanson's daughter, Martha, to Atlantic,
Tuesday as she was going to the Nevada Sanitarium to take
treament for a while.
A.G. Boose and wife took M.C. Mitten over near Red line last
Sunday, where they attended Tent meeings, after which they called
at the John Snyder home.
H.A. Larson's had a house moved onto their lot on Washington
Street recently and are just finishing putting on wall paper.
They will be comfortably settled in their new home before long.
The Elkhorn Implement Company has recently sold three cars, one
Ford touring car to Mason Petersen. Tom Mardesen and John F.
Fredericksen each bought a forty-five horse power Jackson car.
Some of our citizens will respond to the wedding invitation which
P.F. Anderson and wife sent out some time ago when their
daughter, Susie, will be given to Mr. Fred Fredrickson. Both the
bride and groom are well and favorably known, especially
southwest of town. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew
Fredrickson.
AUDUBON TOWNSHIP
Chris Heckman, Sr., is on the sick list.
Katie Mueler spent Sunday at Andrew Mueler's.
Clara Wedemeyer visited Sunday at Charlie Boehme's.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Mueler, July 31st, a boy.
Sam Dufler, wife and daughter, visited Friday at Mrs.
Schwarting's.
Mrs. Bill Franze is here from Missouri visiting relatives and
friends.
Edna Wahe of Adair has been visiting the past week at Henry
Witte's.
John Immel, August Drier, John Petri, Amos Tibben, John Eden,
Henry Petri, and August Dammann and families visited Sunday at
the John Dammann home.
Mrs. John Peterman and daughter, Ruth, departed yesterday morning
for Audubon, where they will visit the remainder of the week with
her husband.
Mrs. Duff returned to her home in Clayton County last Tuesday
morning after a month's visit at the home of her relatives, Mr.
and Mrs. John Peterman and other relatives and friends.
Mrs. James Hicks and children went to Audubon Tuesday morning to
visit her mother, Mrs. Chris Hansen. They went out near
Kimballton to visit her grandfather, returning home on the night
train.
Mr. Gail McClain has resigned his position as cream hauler for
the Alamito Creamery Company of Omaha, and has commenced working
for John I. Hensley on his farm west of town. Mr. Joel Hall has
accepted a position as cream hauler.
EXIRA
Mr. Harold Smith is suffering with a very sore arm this week.
Mr. Hatland, the piano tuner, is looking after his business in
Exira this week.
Mr. A.W. Harvey sold his bay team to Mr. Chris Wolf, who resides
near this city.
Mr. Noah Crane, of near Council Bluffs, visited Monday with his
father, Mr. Samuel Crane.
Mr. L.P. Christensen purchased the residence receently owned and
occupied by D.E. Shrauger.
Miss Lydia Anciaux was reported to be quite ill the first of the
week, but is reported better at this writing.
Amhurst Anderson returned here after an absence of several weeks.
He has been visiting his parents in Halbur.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mitchell and children of Coon Rapids, Iowa,
arrived in the city Thursday to visit a few days at the home of
their daughter, Mrs. Arthur Christensen and husband.
The Exira Studio is open every Wednesday and Saturday from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m., by Mason, of Audubon. Good Photos at reasonable

Thad Seibert visited with his parents Sunday.
Barney Doffing marketed hogs in Exira last Saturday.
Miss Marie Croy, who has been very ill is reported better at this
writing.
Mr. Barney Doffing purchased a fine new Hupobile, the last of
last week.
Mr. John Esbeck lost a fine cow the latter part of last week with
the Black leg.
Charlie Rhodes was out in the country last week helping Andy
Kline with his harvesting.
The Misses Evelyn and Carrie Rendleman visited at the Owen Ide
home in Brayton last week.
Miss Myrtle Hardesty ran a sewing machine needle in her finger
last week while sewing. The accident was painful but not
dangerous.
Miss Mary Basham returned to Exira last Saturday, after visiting
a week with her sister, Mrs. Arthur VanAernam and husband, east
of this city.
Miss Hallie Walker returned to her home in this city last
Thursday after a month's visit near Anita at the home of her
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Pratt.
Mr. Alvin Leffingwell returned to this city last Thursday to
visit relatives and friends. He has been working this summer in
Canada for his brother-in-law, Mr. Ed Bartlett.
The following young people departed last Tuesday morning for Lake
View, where they went for a week's outing on the lake near that
city: John Meyers, Ida Meyer, Ralph Tibben, Nellie Meyer, Ed
Tibben, Edna Hocamp, Walter Meyer, Ethel Tibben, Frank Dimick,
Edna Luke, Clara Tibben, Eva Benton and Nettie Tibben.
Mrs. Herbert Herrick was reported to be vry ill the latter part
of last week at hr home in Hamlin township.
Mr. William Baylor was reported to be very low the past week, but
is some better at this writing.
Miss Dena Hensley sprained her ankle quite badly last Saturday
afternoon, while playing tennis in the Athletic Park.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Anderson of Brayton are the proud parents of
a little daughter, born last Thursday, August 1st.
Mr. and Mrs.. Chris Petersen, who resides southeast of this city,
are the proud and happy parents of a little baby girl, born to
them, Saturday, August 3rd.
Four of the Henry Heath children have been visiting with their
grandparents in the country.

Exira people in my line. Anyone needing the services of a
reliable veterinary surgeon can find me by calling at either the
Exira Drug Co. or Spoo's restaurant. Dr. C.W. Clay, V.S.
Miss Minnie and Master Irving Beck, twin daughter and son of Mr.
and Mrs. N.L. Beck, will celebrate their fifteenth birthday next
Saturday evening at the parental home west of Exia. A big tent
with dancing floor will contribute to the enjoyment of the
evening.
