A man named Froud, keeper of a saloon near the depot, was stabbed and dangerously injured in a row at his house last Saturday night. William Gerard was arrested for the crime and is under guard awaiting a turn in the condition of the wounded man. It is thought he will die, thus adding another name to the millions already enrolled on the banners of alcohol, Satan's most successful agent on earth.

Last week an interesting suit was tried before Squire Wentworth to test the right of married women to hold personal property. The husband had given a mortgage on a lot of hogs, bought and cared for by the wife.—They were sold and she entered suit to recover them. The case was ably argued for the prosecution by Tannehill & Fee and for the defense by Miller & Crosby. The Justice decided in favor of the woman.

We learn through Capt. Cummins that L. G. Hoffman, who was visiting his brother, Dr. Hoffman, of Moravia, dropped dead on Tuesday last. He was in the net of carrying into the house an arm load of stove wood when he was thus hurried out of existence. His death is supposed to have been caused by disease of the heart. He was about 30 years of age and for five years past has resided in Lawrence, Kansas.

There are on the docket of the Circuit Court to meet next Monday 136 cases—66 probate, 65 law and 5 chancery. The Zulauf mill dam cases will be tried. The following jury men have been drawn for this term: T. H. Guffy, R. B. Anderson, John Close, J. Wright, G. W. Athy, Geo. Gollaher, J. J. Gilliland, H. C. Duvall, F. Swartz, Martin Replogle, Wm. Wright, O. P. Martin, J. J. Stone, J. B. McGrew and Joel Martin.

Ichabod Bradbury of Douglas township was before Squire Wentworth this week charged by John Banks with poisoning cattle. The evidence against him failed to convince the Justice of his guilt and he was discharged.

Word comes from Franklin township that the Wilcox flouring mill at Livingston, was destroyed by fire on Wednesday night. Loss about $3,000. It was full of grain.

Emmet Holt of Independence township returned from Oskaloosa College a short time ago and is now studying medicine with Dr. Reynolds at Iconium.

A. M. Burton, formerly of Moravia, now of Randolph county, Mo., called on Thursday. He is trying to learn the young Missourians how to read and write.
