LETTER BOX
In remitting for the Democrat for another year Mrs. J.
C. Wittenberger of Savanna, Ill., nee Ida Teeple, says it is like
a letter from home, looked forward to and read thoroughly. She is
a sister of Miss Angie Teeple and Mrs. John McCabe of this
vicinity.
She writes as follows: "My husband who is agent for the 'Q'
at Proving Grounds, is busy shipping bombs by the train load. I
attend to getting out the Methodist News, a monthly church
bulletin and send it to 120 youths in the armed services,
students and defense workers. Daughter Marian is librarian and
recreational director at the Veteran's Facility, Brecksville,
Ohio. Our son, Capt. Frank has been at Ft. Gueral George G. Meade
near Washington, D. C., since last July. His wife is an employe
(sic) in the censorship office, and her mother cares for their
two sons, Frank and John, and 'Duffy', the Scottie. Our other
daughter Marjorie has been ill the past year, undergoing two
operations and now has rheumatic fever.
"My entries in the women's club contests won cash prizes -
first place in story and play in the 13th district, and the
story, The Claim of Love, a state award.
"Am glad Mrs. Democrat is home again and hope she will soon
be able to write her weekly column."
NABBED THE VIOLATOR AND SPILLED HIS EGGS
State dairy Inspector B. W. Patsey of Maynard and
Winneshiek county authorities are to be complimented on the
manner in which they nipped in the bud plans of a Milwaukee
produce company to process off-quality eggs at Ridgeway, relates
the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
Hearing that an egg-freezing plant had opened at Ridgeway, Patsey
visited the place on May 17 and discovered a complete egg
breaking and freezing plant in operation, stocked with 1,250
cases of shell eggs and 450 cans of frozen eggs, all of which
were apparently of bad quality. On subsequent examination by
state and federal inspectors the entire lot was condemned as
putrid and unfit for human food.
Patsey immediately filed information against Meyer Klempf,
manager of the plant for the S and K Produce company of
Milwaukee, charging dealing in eggs without a license, operating
an improperly registered motor vehicle, possession of eggs unfit
for human food not properly denatured and possession of frozen
eggs which were adulterated and not properly labeled

IN MEMORIAM
In sad but loving memory of our dear Jimmy who departed from us
to be with God and the angels in Heaven:
In the graveyard sweetly sleeping,
Where the flowers gently wave,
Lies the one we loved so dearly,
But whom we could not save.
Heaven now retains our treasure,
Earth his casket keeps,
And the angels love to linger
Where our darling Jimmy sleeps.
We now will decorate your grave
This first Memorial Day.
Loving grandmother and grandfather, Arthur Larson and family.
