--St. Olaf handed Postville's town team a 6-2 defeat Sunday...in
a Northeast Iowa League game. Jim GUNDERSON hurled for
Postville...lacking his customary control, walking five and
hitting one batter. A home run was hit by E. RUGLAND, St. Olaf
shortstop.
--The Fayette and Clayton county rural youth organizations will
hold a joint picnic at the Backbone state park on Sunday
according to Otto BRANDT of Clermont, the program committee
chairman....J.E.HARDESTY, of Postville will speak on
conservation. Other committee members are Arnie BRANDT, James
OSTLIE and Robert KENNEY, all of this community.
--The local chapter of the FFA elected the following officers for
the coming year: president, Harlan CHAMBERLAIN; vice-president,
Kenneth LOONEY; secretary, Eugene WATERS; treasurer, Milton OLSON
and [illegible], Donald KUGEL.
--Foxhound field trials will be held Sunday in the pasture of the
Lee FOLSOM farm, two and a half miles east of Postvile, on
highway 52.
Election results, Allamakee Co.
--Leonard J. BULMAN, Center twp, former sheriff of Allamakee Co.,
won the Republican nomination for sheriff with 1,113 votes. He
defeated Sheriff John P. KING of Waukon,737 votes; R.J. WATERS of
Postville, 597 votes; Ernie SMITH of Waukon, 291 votes and Olaf
KIRKEBY of Waukon with 153 votes.
--Daniel J. RYAN of Union Prairie twp. won the Democratic
nomination for sheriff with 811 votes. He defeated W.T.
SCHWARZHOFF of Waukon, who got 508 votes.
--Henry QUANRUDE of Hanover twp. won the Republican nomination
for member of the board of supervisors, with 1,532 votes. He
nosed out W.J. THOMSON of Center twp., who got 1,154 votes.
--Robert COLLINS of Waukon won the Democratic nomination for
Clerk of the District Court with 573 votes over Nelle A. DUGGAN
of Waukon with 377 votes and Wm. E. FRANK of Harpers Ferry with
321 votes.
--Republicans elected were E.C. MARSTON, county central
committee-man; Mrs.Bernice WALTER, committee-woman; delegates to
county convention: E.C. MARSTON, Lloyd PUTNAM, L.L. HILL, Wm.
KNEELAND, A.C. WEBSTER, C.M. MORGAN, C.F. STUTZMAN, C.C. HOTH,
Mrs. Bernice WALTER and Mrs. Helen KNEELAND. [remainder of

Mrs. Ed MUELLER and Mrs. Charles SULLIVIAN of Fredericksburg
visited Friday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eldo KLUSS. Mrs.
SULLIVAN is Mrs. KLUSS' [I believe it said 'mother'] and Mrs.
MUELLER is her sister.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl SMITH and Mr. and Mrs. Will C. SMITH and
children, [--y]Lee and Will Jr., of Wapello, visited Sunday with
Pauline SMITH. SMITH is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl SMITH.
C.J. O'BRIEN of Decorah, who has been a government veterinarian
since 1901, visited in Postville Monday morning. Dr. O'BRIEN has
three counties in his territory, Winneshiek, Allamakee and
Howard.
Mrs. Jerry CANTY went to Hopkins, Sunday by bus for a visit with
her mother and her children. Mrs. CANTY has been here for several
weeks with her husband, who is employed with the telephone crew,
installing underground cable.
Charles HINMAN, who lives in the Hardin vicinity, escaped serious
injury tuesday in a 20 foot fall. He was working on the Emil
SCHLITTER farm, north of Monona, repairing a [illegible] track in
the SCHLITTER barn. the scaffold he was standing on gave way and
he fell to the floor. Although he is suffering many bruises, no
bones were believed to have been broken.
W.T. SCHWARZHOFF of Waukon was a Postville business visitor on
Tuesday afternoon.

Lansing, Allamakee co. Iowa
June 12, 1940
Immaculate Conception Parish, Lansing, celebrated last Wednesday,
June 5, an event unparalled in Catholic Church history in Iowa --
or the whole nation -- the sixtieth anniversary of its beloved
pastor, Msgr. George L. Haxmeier.
Nick Strub took a group of young Lansing boys to Wexford Sunday
where they engaged in a hilarious baseball game with the Wexford
kids. The Minnows, as the Lansing team call themselves, defeated
Wexford 24 to 9. Among the players were Robert Protsman, Norbert
Strong, Robert Thorsten, Henry Becker, John Schultz, Dick
Unterberger, Paul Unterberger, Jack Dempsey, Carl and Earl Strub,
James Rossi, and their mascot, Danny Strub.

Lansing, Allamakee co. Iowa
June 19, 1940
The D-X Service Station in Lansing, located on the comer of 3rd
and Main street, was leased by a new operator Saturday, June
15th, John Burke, tenant and manager the past three years,
turning it over to Mr. George Anderson of Chicago, who will move
here within the next two weeks.
Coming to the Upper Mississippi for the first time, the big
all-steel Steamer President will give its first Moonlight
Excursion at Lansing on
Tuesday, June 2, leaving at 8:30 p.m. Largest and finest steamer
on the Upper River, the President is a marvel of marine
architecture, Among its outstanding features is the huge Rainbow
Ballroom, two decks high, surrounded by the Club President
mezzanine and lighted by a unique colorama which provides a range
of 80 different combinations of colored light. It is also noted
for its four Hollywood powder rooms, unlike anything ever seen
before on an excursion steamer. It's all-steel hull is divided
into 42 watertight compartments.
The Sears Construction Company of Clear Lake, has completed the
grading work on 11 miles of the Elon road leading east from
Waukon. The improvement of the road is part of the Federal and
State Farm to Market project, and Roverud Brothers of Spring
Grove, Minn.
The city of New Albin installed two new water fountains which are
an added improvement to the town. One bubbler is placed on Main
street and one on the West Side. The fountains were purchased
with the proceeds from the New Albin Day celebration.
