A record-breaking crowd of about 2500 people took in the day
excursion to LaCrosse yesterday on the Streckfus Company's big
steamer President, commanded by Capt. Verne Streckfus, youngest
son of the late veteran Capt. John Streckfus.
A tennis court is being fitted up on the Harpers Ferry town
lots at the light plant, most of the labor being done by
volunteer labor. This will make a wholesome entertainment for
young folks.
Max Daniels, the electrician from Lansing, is wiring the depot in
Harpers Ferry for greater safety. There is a railroad crew there
installing scales for weighing livestock and are also repairing
the stockyards for the better accommodation of farmers shipping
livestock. The depot is also to be painted grey and trimmed in
brown. The railroad company which has been giving very good
service, still has confidence in business from the towns in
farming communities.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burke are receiving congratulations over the
birth of a 7 1/2 lb. son, their first born, which took place at
St. Anne's Maternity Home, La Crosse, Wisc., Monday morning, July
1st.
The George Anderson family of Chicago arrived Sunday and are now
to make Lansing their future home. Mr. Anderson is the new
operator of the D-X service station at the corner of 3rd and
Main and will be assisted by Paul Spinner.
Charles Beucher of Postville, was here Sunday with his
Taylorcraft airplane, landing in the Bakewell bottoms adjoining
the city limits. After spending part of the day with the Kerndt
boys, Mr. Beucher, with Gus F. Kerndt at the wheel, flew the
plane to Platteville and Dubuque.

Official figures as given out by census taker Matt Guider for
the city of Lansing are as follows: Persons enumerated, 1379;
infant cards, 7; farm schedules, 8; dwelling units, 379; vacant
dwellings, 17. This was the correct and official count as sent in
only a few days ago. Population of south Lansing now is 241 with
67 dwelling units.
Mayor Frank A. Riser has made a fine improvement to his building
on main street in the form of a large sun porch. Decker Bros. and
Geo. Schelhammer done the work.
Miss Dorothy Kumpf, the beauty parlor operator, took a few days
vacation last week, motoring to Chicago and Maywood, Ill., on
Wednesday where she was to visit friends.
Average pay for office machine operators in New York city is
$24.92 a week.
The ice cream social sponsored by the members of the
Congregational church at Churchtown last evening was a huge
success. Everything was sold out, the largest crowd ever
attending this affair was reported present, and many turned away
as they ran short of ice cream. About $125 will be cleared, and
the members sincerely thank the public for their generous
patronage.
Men do discuss clothes with each other, but very briefly. They
have so few clothes to discuss.
