Thinking Out Loud - a column by Don Amundsen
Census takers are at work this month conducting the decennial
census. Although counting of noses should have started on April
2, it was delayed in Postville for a few days. They say that
taking of the census was not begun in the cities on April 1
becuase they didn't want to fool anybody. The average resident of
this vicinity shouldn't have any trouble with the questions, but,
no doubt, some of the people would rather not answer a few of
them. If the individual desires, he can answer the questions in
private, put them in a sealed envelope and have the enumerator
send it directly to the census bureau in Washington.
Mr. and Mrs. Billy Lange of Bluffton, Winneshiek county, really
started something several weeks ago when they said their infant
son had seven living grandparents. A Decorah newspaper believed
it was a record. Then the next week Mr. and Mrs. Lester VanWey of
Frankville went the Langes one better by explaining that their
baby son had eight living grandparents..... I believed the
question was settled when the issue was dripped during the
ensuing weeks. But only last week Mrs. Lloyd Block and her son,
Gale Block, stopped at the Herald office to lay claim to
a new record. She told me that Gale, who is two and a half years
old, has nine living grandparents. Six of the grandparents are on
Mrs. Block's side of the family..... They are: her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Ben Shafer of Ludlow township; her grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Ernest Shafer, also of Ludlow township, and Mr. and Mrs.
William Kostman of Waukon, former Postville residents. The other
three grandparents are on Mr. Block's side. They are: his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Block of Postville; and his
grandmother, Mrs. A.D. Meyer also of Postville.... That's a
record that is hard to beat.
