Henry Krogman Passes At Farm Home Monday
Henry Krogman of Post township passed away Monday, aged 75 years
and 9 months, and funeral services will be held this (Thursday)
afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran church in this city, with the
Rev. F.R. Ludwig officiating. Interment is to be made in
Postville cemetery. Mr. Krogman was born in Germany, June 3,
1863, coming to the United States with his brothers and sisters
in his youth. In 1893 he was married to Miss Lena Bachtold to
which union two children were born, a daughter, Emma, and a son,
William, who together with the widow survive. He is also survived
by his sisters, Mrs. Fred Blumhagen of Castalia and Mrs. Minnie
Muchow of Fergus Falls, Minn., as well as other relatives and
friends. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church. Before
moving to their Cherry Valley farm, where the family has lived
for 44 years, Mr. Krogman operated the Christ Poesch farm for two
years in Grand Meadow township.
Marcella Burrow Weds Lavern Schultz, Castalia
Miss Marcella Janet Burrow of Postville and LaVerne L.L. Schultz
of Castalia were united in marriage Saturday evening at 7:30
o'clock in the Lutheran church at Castalia, the double ring
ceremony being employed by the officiating pastor, Rev. Wm.
Striepe. Lohengrin's wedding march was played as the couple
entered the church. Mrs.Striepe presiding at the organ. The bride
was attired in a floor length gown of white net and wore a long
veil set off with a wreath and carried a bouquet of white and
rose carnations. Her bridesmaid, Miss Violet Schultz, a sister of
the bridegroom, wore a rose colored taffeta floor length gown.
Mr. Ralph Schultz, brother of the bridegroom, acting as best man,
and the bridegroom wore suits of oxford gray. The bride is the
only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Burrow of this city and the
bridegroom is the second eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Schultz of Castalia. The young couple will make their home at
Castalia where Mr. Schultz is employed.
Funeral Services Held Tuesday for Sam Hofer
Funeral services for Sam Hofer, 56, Postville business man, who
passed away last Friday at his home in this city after a long
illness, were held Tuesday afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran
church with the Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig officiating, and
interment was made in the cemetery at Elgin, Iowa. Mr. Hofer had
been engaged in the restaurant business here for the past several
years coming here from Lansing with is family. He was born on the
old Hofer homestead, east of Elgin, Iowa, November 9, 1882, the
son of Nick and Eliza Hofer. He was one of a family of twelve
children. Mr. Hofer was married to Louise Pfarr at Canton, South
Dakota, on January 3, 1905, and to this union nine children were
born, all of whom, together with the widow survive. The children
are Lawrence, Clifford, William and Arthur of Postville; Richard
of Luana, Melbert of Gunder, Mrs. Bertha Jennings and Dorothy
Hofer of Quincy, Ill., and Eileen Hofer of Chicago, Illinois. He
is also survived by six sisters, Mrs. Pauline Dennier, Mrs.
Rosina Dennier, Mrs. Lena Acklemeyer, Mrs. Marie Leonard, Mrs.
Lydia Odegard, and Mrs. Anna Clark; two brothers, Fred and Ben
Hofer, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
Mrs. August Kugel Passes Away at Home Sunday
Mrs. August Kugel, aged 79 years, 8 mos. and four days, passed
away at home in this city Sunday. Services were held Wednesday
afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran church with the Rev. Frederick
R. Ludwig offiating and interment was in Grand Meadow cemetery.
As Marie Zieman, the deceased was born in Jefferson township,
Clayton county on July 1, 1859, the daughter of John and
Elizabeth Meier Zieman. Since she was 12 years old she has lived
in this community. She was married to August Kugel on February
21, 1884, and six children were born to this union, five of whom,
survive. One son, Fred, passed away at five years old and her
husband passed away in February 1932. The surviving children are
Mrs. Fred Borcherding of Guttenberg; Louise Kugel, Postville;
William Kugel, Luana; Mrs. G.A. Renne, Cedar Rapids; and Harvey
Kugel, Postville. She is also survived by one brother, Albert
Zieman of Postville, and six grandchildren as well as other
relatives and a host of friends. The deceased had made her home
in Postville for the past several years since the family retired
from the old home farm southeast of town.
Miss Grace Swenson Weds Herbert G. Hayes Feb 25
Miss Grace Swenson of Luana and Mr. Herbert G. Hayes of New Albin
were married Saturday, February 25, at Cedar Rapids. Mrs. Hayes
is attending a beauty school at the Paris Academy in Cedar Rapids
and Mr. Hayes is superintendentand coach of the Beech, Iowa
consolidated school. Mrs. Hayes wll join her husband this fall
after she completes her course at the Paris Academy. Mrs. Hayes
is a sister of Mrs. Leonard Pearson of this city.
Ludwig Linderbaum Passes Tuesday, Funeral Friday
Ludwig Linderbaum, a well known and highly respected former
resident of Postville, passed away on Tuesday morning at 10:30 at
the home of his daughter, Mrs. F.W. Martens, and husband in the
vicinity of Frankville, where he had been making his home of
late. He was aged about 85 years. The funeral will be held on
Friday afternoon, at one o'clock from the Martens home, and at
two o'clock from St. Paul's Lutheran church in this city, the
Rev. Fredrick R. Ludwig officating. Obituary next week.
Annual School Election To Be Held Next Monday.
The annual election of directors to serve for three years in the
Independent School District of Postville will be held in the
basement of Turner Hall next Monday, March 13, with polls opening
at 12 o'clock noon, and closing at seven o'clock p.m. Petitions
nominating Euclid C. Marston to suceed himself and elmer A. Hoth
to succeed Ed. F Schroeder who declined to be a candidate after
having served for nine years on the school board, were filed at
the office of the secretary, Keith Gray, last Friday, shortly
before noon, the time limit for filing such petitions. Mr.
Marston, president of the board, is serving his first term, while
Mr. Hoth is a newcomer seeking a first term. Both are the parents
of children of school age. Holdover directors in this school
district are F.H. Luhman, whose term expires in 1940, and J.M.
Thoma and Leonard Casten whose term expires in 1941.
