O.E.S. Twenty-eighth Anniversary

These get-together meetings are a fine thing for any organization
and promote sociability and co-operation. Postville Chapter, No.
288 is now twenty-eight years old as their charter was given them
October 26, 1898. The charter members were Mrs. Carrie Cornell,
Mrs. Etta Crosby, Mrs. May Douglass, Mrs. Flynn, Mrs. Ida Hart,
Mrs. Mary Hecker, Mrs. Mary McNeil, Mrs. Hattie Prior, Mrs. Ella
Hawkins, Mrs. Mary Holter, Mrs. Belle Orr, Mrs. Sophia Perry,
Mrs. Etta Perry, Mrs. Mary Stiles, Mrs. Anna Staadt, Mrs. Mary
Rollison, Mrs. Eva Tuller, Mrs. Mate Welzel, Mrs. Sarah Wallis,
Mrs. E. Webster and James Perry. Mrs. Carrie Cornell was the
first worthy matron and James Perry the first worthy patron.
Although the membership of the chaper has grown to many times the
original number, not all of the first ones are left, which is the
only sad thought to mar an otherwise happy anniversary
celebration.
Dan Lambert Dies at County Home
Dan Lambert, years ago a well known hostler in the Postville
livery, passed away on Wednesday morning, March 31, 1926, at the
Allamakee County Home, of which he had been an inmate since
September 17, 1924, and which he said was the best home he had
known in years. A phone message to J.M. Harris of this city
yesterday morning brought the news of Dan's death and Louis
Schutte drove over to the County Home after the body and brought
it to the undertaking rooms of Harris & Schutte, where it was
prepared for burial. Interment will be made in the Castalia
cemetery. Dan's face was a familiar one to many of the old timers
here. He was aged 79 years, 10 months and 20 days.
Herman H. Harris Dies at Independence.
Following a protracted period of physical decline, Herman H.
Harris of this city passed away on Friday, March 26, 1926, at
Independence, where he had been a patient at the state hospital
for a little more than two weeks, the final summons coming with a
suddenness that was a surprise and a shock to both his family and
his friends.
Herman H. Harris was born in Post township, Allamakee county,
Iowa, October 10, 1869, and at the time of his death was aged 55
years, five months and 19 days. He was the only son of the late
William and Charity Harris. On February 12, 1895, he was united
in marriage with Christine Wilman [Willman] and to this union was
born one daughter, Osa Jane, who died April 25, 1924. He was a
lifelong resident of this city and locality and was known to all
as a quiet and peaceable citizen, honorable and upright in his
dealings with his fellow men and a good husband and father.
Besides his widow he is survived by five sisters - Mrs. Bertha J.
Orr, Mrs. Charity G. Webster and Mrs. Bessie A. Beucher, all of
Postville; Mrs. Edith Churchill of Monroe, Wisconsin, and Mrs.
Edna E. Oehring of McGregor. The funeral was held from St. Paul's
Lutheran church at two o'clock on Monday afternoon, Rev. R.
Franklin Galloway of the Community Presbyterian church
officiating, assisted by Rev. E.T. Finck of St. Paul's church.
Interment in the Postville cemetery.
