Fred KUHSE, Mrs. Wm. BAREIS and Mrs. Ernest BRANDT were called to Tennis, So. Dak., this week by the death of their sister, Mrs. Anna HOFFMAN.

Will OEHRING evidently is the champion potato grower here. He brought us a sample that weighed 2 1/2 pounds.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. J.H. WITT Nov. 2 and a daughter Nov. 3 to Mr. and Mrs. Frank SCHWEINEFUS, all of near Castalia.

Henry BLOCK, 72, father of Henry and Fred BLOCK of this community, passed away in Postville Sunday. A daughter, Anna, five grandchildren and a half-brother, William BLOCK, of Guttenburg also survive.

Post township cast 622 ballots Tuesday in the general election, 91 straight republican and 72 straight democratic. In the state the republicans piled up a majority of 150,000. BROOKHART was elected Senator and the soldiers' bonus carried easily. Allamakee county elected all republican office holders.

A gold headed cane was bought from funds contributed by local friends of the Rev. J.J. CLUNE who recently went from here to Lawler. In acknowledging the gift, Rev. CLUNE wrote, "The cane will be a reminder always of the all too few years I had the pleasure to spend in your midst and the many friendships formed there."

John C. WEIHE was elected president of the Grand Meadow Farm Bureau at its meeting Tuesday night, Others chosen were Fred C. SCHULTZ, vice president; W.C. SCHROEDER, secretary-treasurer; Lee FOLSOM,E.J. HANDY, Frank CAHALAN, R.F. BALTZ, F.H. BRANDT an E.M. OLSON, district cooperators.

The Post township Farm Bureau elected new officers at their annual meeting last week. Carl WELZEL is the new president; H.W. MEIER is vice president; and Arbe BEHRENS is secretary-treasurer. Directors are Loney FOLSOM, Frank SEBASTIAN, Ben LANGE, Ralph BACHTELL, Jay MARSTON, W.L. MEYER, Milo FOLSOM, Rudy BUGENHAGEN and Ralph GREEN.

Charles F. REINCKE was appointed as Postville's night watchman by Mayor Geo. FAY last Friday.

The Lynn GORDANIER family have gone to Kalamazoo, Mich., where they recently purchased property.

H.W. HARNACK has opened an army goods store in the former Prior monument building.

Mr. and Mrs. John KRAMBEER celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary at Luana last Wednesday.

Mrs. Henry WOLTER's mother arrived in Luana this week from Germany and will make her future home with them.

Charles KRUMM handled a big real estate transaction this week when he sold the 400 acre RAFFERTY farm south of Postville to Harry N. TURNER of Wagner township for $180 per acre, or $72,000. Mr. TURNER's 100 acre farm was taken on the deal at $225 per acre.

At Castalia next Monday night the following pupils of the high school will appear in the declamatory contest: George MONROE, Vera MEYER, Marguerite ALLEN, Marjorie KOBRIGER, Elsie SCHULTZ, Chloe HAEFNER, Elinor ALLEN, Harold and Wilma NEUENSCHWANDER, Ray HERVEY, Luella RICHARDS, Anna STEE and Marie MANN.

The following high school students will appear in the declamatory contest here next Thursday and Friday: Oratorical, Don PETERSON, Mack PETERSON and Zana GORDON; Dramatic, Edna GORDON, Marguerite LYDON, Caroline SANDER, Lulu Ann UHL, Viola WEIHE; Humerous, Ruth FOLEY, Leslie HECKMAN, Nina HINMAN, Dorothy MEIER, Amy MEYER, Alice PHILLIPS, Elizabeth SONNKALB and Albert THORNTON.

The American legion boys entertained the business men at a game dinner at their hall Tuesday night. The members of the Post had been divided into two groups of hunters Sunday, the losers being charged with putting on the feed. Ralph DAVIS and his squad bagged 47 cottontails and squirrels, while the hunters captained by Walter GASS came in with 53 head, so "Jeff" and his lads had to dress and prepare the 100 head for the dinner.
