Good news comes from Henry BAKER, formerly located here with H.
O. HOWARD. he was recently elected treasurer of the Crab Creek
Lumber Co., at Seattle, Washington.
Roland JOHNSON was taken to La Crosse Wednesday for an operation
for appendicitis, and we are informed that the operation was
successful, and Mrs. Johnson reports him improving.
A bargain has been made between the Presbyterians and the WELSH
sisters for the sale of the Presbyterian parsonage. Rev. VAN NICE
has moved his family into the OPFER residence on Beeman hill.
Chas. SAEWART, while preparing to move his threshing outfit from
John JOHNSON's on Round Prairie last Saturday evening, got a
couple of fingers of his right hand badly smashed. Chas. says his
hand was not as hard as the pulleys on the machine and he got the
worst of it.
Ole HALVERSON of Thompson, Iowa, spent the past week with
Allamakee county relatives, and yesterday made this office a
visit. Mr. Halverson informs us he came to Allamakee county in
1867, locating in Union Prairie township, and relocated at
Thompson Iowa, thirteen years ago, and this was his first visit
since removing west. He found many canges about town.
Obituary
BATIN - Mrs. Mary BATIN, of New Albin, died Thursday afternoon,
October 3rd, after a lingering illness, aged 95 years. She
is survived by six of eleven children. She became a member of the
Methodist Church when eighteen years of age. Her remains
were interred Saturday in the German Methodist cemetery on May's
Prairie ridge beside her husband, who died many years ago.
Mrs. Batin was one of the earliest settlers of this county.
PIERCE - Walter PIERCE has been apprised of the death of his
uncle, Nemiah Pierce, which occurred at Long Beach, California,
recently. The gentleman formerly resided here and was past
84 years of age.
RYAN - The remains of Dennis RYAN were brought from Dubuque
yesterday. Mr. Ryan was one of the pioneer settlers of
Allamakee county, but located in Oklahoma a few years ago,
returning last spring and then went to Dubuque for treatment in a
private asylum where he died.
