Postville Review
Postville, Allamakee co. Iowa
February 2, 1906
The return dance which the Postville Krockers Club will tender
the Standard Telephone Operators at Turner Hall tomorrow night
will without doubt be the best attended and most pleasant social
gathering of the season. All the good natured and good looking
"Hel-lo Girls" from all points of the compass
(including our own Kate) will be here with a big bunch of their
friends and there'll be some delightful diddings. Carpenter's
Home Orchestra has harnessed up som music that will be sprung for
the first time on this gala occasion, and if you want to have the
time of your life be on hand tomorrow night.
About thirty of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Bollman's friends gathered
at their beautiful home, four miles north of Postville, Saturday
evening and completely surprised them. However this crowd was
made welcome and had a royal good time. the early part of the
evening was spent in playing games, and later everything was
moved from the polished kitchen floor and to the music of three
violins made merry by dancing. Then was supper, after which all
departed pronouncing the party a success.
There was considerable property changing in Postville Wednesday.
D. Blackburn started the ball rolling by purchasing C.F. Meier's
beautiful residence on central Green street for consideration of
$2800, and Mr. Meier then purchased the 66 1/2 acre farm of Henry
Knodt, immediately adjoining town, for $8312.50, or $125 per
acre. The place has splendid improvements and is just over the
line in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county. Possession given
March first in each case.
Thomas Fleming and wife returned to Mason City Wednesday after
having been here on the sad mission of laying to rest his
venerable father, Michael Fleming, who was buried at Clermont
Tuesday.

Citizens of Grand Meadow township, Clayton Co. passed away
Sunday, Jan. 28, 1906 a the home of his son, B. C. Fleming after
a two weeks illness, in his 93rd year. His death was due to no

constitution after an active life of many years, and it is said
until his latest illness the old gentleman had never known a sick
day in all his life.
He was born in Ireland, May 6, 1813, and emigrated to the United
States in April 1838, settling in New York. In 1840 he was
married to Mary Condon, to which union were born ten children.
Gradually moving Westward he came to Chicago in 1850, and in June
1856 he moved to Grand Meadow township, Clayton county, Iowa,
settling on the farm that was his home until his death.
He is survived by 8 children, 28 grand children and 26 great
grand children, the wife and two children having preceded him to
the farther shore, The funeral was held from the Catholic church
at Clermont, Tuesday, Jan. 30th, and the large attendance of

way ever held in Postville, and that is saying a good deal, for
this old town has had some swell doings for a community of its

Sunday best and their sweetest simile, and to the merry music of

Obituary
Louis Welzel was born in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county,
Iowa, 19 Nov. 1866, and died at the home of his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. John Welzel, on Monday, 11 Feb. 1906, aged 29 years, 2
months and 21 days. His latest illness began about 2 weeks ago,
yet few of the people of Postville knew of it until last Sunday
afternoon when the tolling bell from the steeple of the St.
Paul's Lutheran church spoke out the passing of another soul.
Afflicted from childhood up with a frail constitution he was
denied many of the pleasures of the average person is heir to,
yet he never complained of his misfortune to those about hiim,
but always had a cheery word and a pleasant smile for all. All
his life was spent beneath the parental roof and assistd his
venerable parents in the conduct and management of the farm.
Seldom indeed did he come to town, preferring the peaceful quiet
of the home and the association with father and mother to all
else. He was a young man of high ideals and splendid character,
honest, upright, charitable and kind, his life was and example
worthy of emulation, and today we doubt not he is basking in the
smiles of Him who said "Come unto me all ye that labor and
are heavy laden and I will give you rest."
He is survived by his father, mother, four brothers and a sister,
who have the sympathy of all in their hour of bereavement and
sorrow.
The funeral was held from St. Paul's Lutheran church Tuesday,
Feb. 13th, at one o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev. M. O. Puhl, and
despite the fact that the most severe snow storm of the winter
was in progress a large number of friends were present. Interment
was made in Postville cemetery.
Card of Thanks
To the many friends who by deed and word have so kindly assisted
us during the illness and after the death of our beloved son,
Louis, we hereby return our heartfelt thanks.
