-A surprise party was held at the John Leui home Monday evening.
-W.J. Schultz and son drove to Waukon Thursday and sold a horse
there.
-Assessor Fritz Welzel is now going from house to house with the
big tax book under his arm.
-Tom Murray sold his 120 acres north of here to Wm. Beisker for
$45 per acre.
-R.F. Hecker's mother died in Lansing and Robert and his wife
went there to attend the funeral.
-Wm. Black and family of Clermont were in Postville Tuesday to
have a family picture taken by F.N. Beedy.
-Hall Roberts arrived in New Hampshire too late to find his
mother living. She died shortly before his arrival, aged 92
years.
-Miss Belle Henderson, daughter of Congressman David Henderson,
is studying music in Paris and is said to show considerable
talent.
-Miss Jeanette Durno of Chicago, a vocalist who has often
appeared before Postville audiences, was recently married to
Justen Collins.
-Joachim Doerring died Thursday at the home of his son William,
of pneumonia. He was 69 years old and had been farming in America
since 1883. He leaves five children.
-Fritz Lindroth and Lucy Pahlas were united in marriage by Rev.
Seifert, February 8. The wedding took place at the farm home of
Mrs. George Pahlas near Farmersburg.
-Herman Plaht this year had good luck in raising hogs. He brought
45 to market which weighed 11,890 or an average of 264. He
received $4.90 per hundred which amounted to $582.61.
-Last Thursday at 7 a.m. the dwelling house on the R.F. Hecker
farm was burned to the ground. Fritz Thoma, who occupied it, lost
nearly everything and carried no insurance and a collection was
speedily taken for him and his family. The house was partially
insured and Ray Schuler has already begun the building of a new
one there.

- Mr. and Mrs. George Ervin have a fine new boy.
- Bessie Roberts has returned from a two weeks visit in Chicago.
- The epidemic of grippe is abating and the doctors are no longer
so busy.
- Thos. Murray has purchased a16 acre farm in Hancock county for
$45 per acre.
- Have you any cavities in your mouth? Dr. Coleman will fill them
for 50 cents each.
- George Thoma sold his 80 acre farm in Grand Meadow last week to
Henry Schuette for $5,600.
- Ex-Gov. Larrabee has secured three cannons for the park in
Clermont. Each one of them weights over 15,000 pounds.
- Guy Mead, the compositor in the Review office has purchased a
home. He bought the Elmer Marsh house for $900.
- Assessor Fritz Welzel went to Minneapolis Tuesday morning to
attend the Buttemakers and Creamery Men's Convention.
- The Crokinole Club will meet Friday evening at the J.B. Hart
home. The members are to be dressed in Colonial costumes.
- A large company of friends were entertained at the Fred
Williams farm home last Wednesday evening, where they had a most
delightful time.
- John Crosby is selling Clear Quill Flour at $1 per sack, bulk
coffee at 11 cents per pound and good galvanized 5 gallon oil
cans, filled with best kerosene, for $1.
- The commodious Will Durno home was the scene of a social dance
on Monday evening. Mrs. Durno was assisted as hostess by Mrs.
Frank Tuller and all present expressed their thanks for the
cordial hospitality extended.
- Our neighboring town, Elgin, has become enriched by another new
industry, the Bell shirt factory of West Union having moved
there. With a canning factory, a tobacco factory and now a shirt
factory that town should be doing well.
- C.H. Meier purchased 113 acres of land of S.A. Harris for $58
per acre and 50 acres of Wm. Harris for $45 per acre. Mr. Meier
sold a farm in the west and with the money bought [remainder cut
