-A sister of Jas. Gregg arrived here from Canada for a visit.
-H.H. Barton, the Methodist pastor, will be transferred to
Reinbeck.
-Daniel Lukenbill of Ossian, is here to visit his daughter, Mrs.
Wm. Durno.
-J.W. Press has sold his 80 acres farm northwest of here to Ed
Trudo for $50 per acre.
-A.F. Hofer and family of Salem, Oregon, are here for a visit in
the R.N. Douglass home.
-On Tuesday, H.P. Hawkins was married to Mrs. Evert. They will
occupy the home vacated by Mr. Carbee.
-"Dads" White was passing out cigars with a happy smile
Sunday as he became the "papa" of a fine son Saturday.
-Henry Daubenberger, who is conducting a drug business at Fonda,
was recently married to a lady named Julia O'Connor.
-Jas M. Harris has rented the empty building of Mrs. Fritz Thoma
and will open a furniture and undertaking establishment in it.
-Geo. Lull has rented the Sanders farm to Jas Hoy and Dan McNeil
for 5 years, with the agreement that the two can then buy the
farm for $18,000.
-The piece of new road on the way to Waukon along the Yellow
river, which was built this summer, is now in bad shape.
Supervisor Eaton will do a good public service if he will get
this road in order soon.
-Clermont had a sad thing happen there. The entire Haug family
was taken with diphtheria and inside of 24 hours, the mother, and
two children died. The father and the other child are still in a
dangerous condition.*
-Last Thursday as the thunderstorm passed over this vicinity,
Hans Christofferson's large barn was struck by lightening and
burned to the ground. His sons, who were in the barn when it was
struck, had to do some quick work to get the cattle and horses
out to safety, but the hay supply was burned.
-Wm. Calender died very suddenly Monday while threshing at the
Frank Bollman place in Lybrand. His fellow workers missed him and
a search revealed him dead on the straw pile. Heart trouble was
the cause. He was 55 years old and leaves a wife and a
stepdaughter. The funeral was held Wednesday at Bethel.

Joe Gray has purchased Schuette's dairy business.
Mrs. Crabtree and her mother went to Birmingham, Alabama, to
spend the winter.
Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Hecker and daughter were in Lansing from
Saturday to Monday.
A big wedding was celebrated on the Louis Schwinefus farm October
16, when Henry Mundt and Rosa Meyer were married.
Herman Sander of Waukon was here Monday with a load of sheep
looking for a market.
W. Witt and Chas. Huebner, who bought Hart's furniture store,
arrived Tuesday to invoice.
John M. Thoma, the druggist, is papa once more as a fine little
daughter was born at their home Sunday morning. We congratulate.
Monday, the Widow Dickson was buried at Watson. She lived for
many years at the farm home of Moses McMaster and had reached the
age of 82.
Two ponies were shot on the Wm. Buddenberg farm last week. It was
believed they had glanders and the loss had to be taken to
protect other horses.
Wendel Wagner, the young man who has been employed in Kuester's
Butcher shop, has established himself in business in a new town
in Minnesota called Triumph.
Widow Ruckdaschel sold her nice home and grounds in Postville
last week to her son John for $2,400. John has rented his farm
and will move to town to make a home for his mother.
An Orpheus club has been organized in Postville which all the
musically inclined have joined and pledged themselves to
cultivate a taste for better music. Miss Walker is president of
the club.
County Sheriff Bullman was in town for a few hours Saturday. He
had been to Independence with a patient for the asylum.
Mrs. Chas Wegner visited friends in the vicinity of Cresco last
week. She also visited the married daughter of Rudolph Meyer,
Mrs. Maranda, of Ridgeway. It so happened that the day she
arrived was the date of their wooden wedding anniversary and that
evening a large company of friends came in to give them a happy
surprise.
The new pipe organ for St. Paul's church arrived this week and a
trial concert will be given Monday. Geo. Blakely of LaCrosse,
Wisconsin, will be here as organist and Miss Nellie Abbott and
A.L. Meier will be the soloists.
