- While chopping wood on the islands, Frank Dougherty of New
Albin cut a bad gash in his head with a doublebitted axe.
- Lycurgus Lyceum debated whether farmer or mechanic was the
greater wealth producer. Affirmative - D.D. Ronan, Neal Harkins,
J.P. Regan; Negative - W.J. Doran, D.J. Whalen, J.F. Ronan. The
judges, M. Beck, T. Mahr, and Annie Laughlin, decided for the
negative.
- George Bull, a Ludlow farmer, died last week. The place had
been quarantined for diphtheria.
- "Resolved, fear of punishment has more influence than hope
of Reward." Affirmative - Al Benninger, W.C. Sandry, C.C.
Feurhelm; negative - Frank Stirn, Jr., Kate Guider, Joan Casey.
- A big Norwegian wedding took place Feb. 13 in Waterloo twp.,
the high contracting parties being Martin Dille and Miss Clara
Clauson.
- The Jefferson ball club will give a dance at Rossville March
1st.
- Thomas Hartley of Milwaukee has purchased the Saunders cigar
factory in Waukon.
- Owen Curtis, an old resident of Ludlow township, died Feb. 14
as a result of pipe cancer. He made his home with his son-in-law,
James Piggott.
- Mayor Eaton wants to retire in Waukon and the Citizens will
name R.N. Slitor, and the Republicans, Cullen Beeman.
- Canned goods prices are not down to the low level of 35 years
ago yet. Carl Beeman, Waukon grocer, was advertising "3lb
fancy yellow peaches for 1O˘, perfection tomatoes for 8˘ and
extra-fine sweet corn for 6˘."
- Lycurgus Lyceum debated, "Should Dancing Be
Discouraged?" W.J. Doran, P.E. O'Donnell, N. Harkins and Dan
Ronan took the affirmative, while the negative was upheld by J.F.
Ronan, D. Whalen, S. O'Leary and J.P. Regan, the latter winning.
T. McCauley, C.P. Nierling and R. McNamey, judges.
- Ed Roggensack, the Lansing marble man, has bought the Burgess
building on Main street.
- Last meeting of Lansing Euchre Club was held at J. Cassidy's.
J.C. Healy won head prize and Frank Spinner booby; and many
members danced when James played the "White Cockade."
- John Quillin of Hanover has opened a shoe repair shop in
Harpers Ferry.
- 16 below zero Friday, Feb. 26.
- The temperance saloon run by Strong & Verdon in. the
O'Meara building, Lansing, closed last week on account of slack
business.
- Rube Bakewell raised a barn on his islands north of Lansing and
Ed Riser expects to have 150 acres of corn on his island farm.
- M.J. Gleason has rented his 300 acre farm in Lafayette and
Taylor to P. Kernan, who pays $2.25 per acre rent for the
cultivated land.
Levi Horne of Lansing is an old friend and schoolmate of
President elect Wm. McKinley.
Olson, the new Lansing tailor, was bound over to the Grand jury
for maintaining a liquor nuisance.
Johnny Cole has bought the Lumber Company's office in south
Lansing.
Dan Regan, James Connor, James Buggy, Anton Plein and Hugh Deeney
will manage a charity ball at Forester Opera House, Waukon, Feb.
16th.
