Mr. and Mrs. Jas. GORDON, young Jas. GORDON, Don HARDIN and Will
SPOO went on Tuesday's excursion to Neb.
Mrs. BLANCHARD is to have her limb amputated tomorrow. It seems
her only chance.
Mrs. Hilas BURNHAM was badly hurt last week by the kick of a
horse, receiving a bad cut and a compound fracture of the bone of
her lower limb. Dr. BROWN attends her.

DIED
DOUGLASS --- At the residence of her son Robert, Ludlow twp.,
September 10th, 1889, Mrs. Catherine Douglass, aged 75 years, and
8 months. Mrs. Douglass was born in Ayreshing, Scotland, in 1814.
She came to this country and settled in Illinois in 1852 and two
years later she made her home in Allamakee county, Iowa, where
she resided until the day of her death. During twenty years of
her life she lived a widow. She was the mother of eight children,
five of whom survive her. In Scotland, she was a member of the
Presbyterian church. In the later years of her life she conformed
to the religious customs of her sons family in which she made her
home, though she did not become a member to the church which they
belonged. She died suddenly without apparent pain or regret. The
funeral services conducted by Rev. D. N. Ma_on, at the late
residence were largely attended. A long procession followed the
bereaved kindred to the place of burial near Postville.

We are sorry to learn that J.M. HARRIS has bought a farm
adjoining Waukon and will leave our section of the country. We
had hoped that he would decide to come to Postville.
Jas. BROOKS, an old resident of Wagner twp., 65 years of age,
committed suicide by hanging.
Mrs. BLANCHARD came through the surgical operation and is doing
as well as could be expected.

Elsie SMITH, of Cresco, daughter of the editor of the Cresco

On Sept 15th, 1889, by E. SWENSON, J.P.; Mr. Henry H. ANDERSON to
Mrs. Mary M. MOODY, both of Postville.
At the residence of the bride's parents, near Postville; on
Wednesday noon, Sept 18th, 1889, by Rev. J.O. THRUSH, Mr. A.
Edward CORNELL and Miss Carrie B. ORR. Miss Ollie ORR was bride's
maid and Mr. PACKARD acted as groom's man. The bride was born and
reared here and is one of our most accomplished young ladies. Mr.
CORNELL, as proprietor of the Commerical Hotel for nearly 5 years
is as well known as any of our businessmen. The couple left on
Thursday for a bridal tour of ten days. When they return they
will be 'at home' as landlord and landlady of the Commercial.

THREE CHILDREN BURNED TO DEATH.
The John C. BEALS house, situated in Jefferson twp, 6 mies S. of
Waukon; burned to the ground and the charred remains of 3
children were found in the ruin. The house was occupied by a
German family named ENGEL; Ernest ENGEL, his wife Mary, daughter
Mary age 7, Ernst age 5 and Ida age 18 months. The remains of the
children were found in the cellar. The oldest girl had some
pieces of cloth wound tightly about her nect, leading to the
suspicion that she had been strangled to death before the
burning. The fire was first discovered by Richard REDDY and he
rean to the house but too late to save anything. The affair has a
mysterious outlook and the mother was placed under arrest and
lodged in jail. The family arrived last January from Hanover,
Germany. The husband left last Wednesday to look for work and the
wife does not know where he is now. The case is awaiting the
grand jury's attention.
