The people of Lansing turned out last week and gave judge FELLOWS and wife a congratulatory surprise on account of his elevation to the judgeship.

OBITUARY.
Died, at the residence of his son, John McKINLEY, in Grand Meadow twp., on Friday, Jan 4, 1889, of heart disease, Mr. Archibald McKINLEY, aged 84 years, 10 months and 9 days. Deceased was born in Ireland, Mar. 25, 1804. He was united in marriage to Nancy MORRISON in 1827 and enjoyed 53 years of wedded life. Eight sons blessed this union, five of whom survive him, John & James of Clayton Co., William of Chicago, Alex of Clermont and Archie of Forest Hill, Cal. He emigrated to New York at an early day and later to Iowa, coming here in 1863, where he has since resided. He lead a truly christian life, and came as near the ideal man as it is possible for human frailty to approach. During his last moments when it was difficult to determine to which world he belonged, being speechless yet conscious, his eyes directed upward, immortality and glory were the imprints on his countenance, and muttering passages of scripture all at once the 'weary wheels of life stood still.'

MARRIED.
At the residence of J.T. PARKER, on Jan 14th, by Rev. J.O. THRUSH, Mr. J.A. PARKER and Miss Anna MITCHELL.

At the residence of the bride's parents, near West Union, on Dec. 27th, Dr. J.F. COLE, of Oelwein and Miss Nellie BARCLAY, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.C. BARCLAY, formerly from near Postville.

Mrs. J.M. HARRIS has been in Dubuque for 2 or 3 weeks having an operation performed on a rupture. She is doing well and hopes are entertained that she will fully recover.

Ham. CAMPBELL lost a horse suddenly in town this week. It fell dead in the harness at SHORTREED & MEYER's shop. Heart difficulty was the probable cause.

Mrs. J.C. BEEDY, of Hardin has been quite sick.
