Mr. James RYAN, of Frankville, met with an accident on Friday,
occasioned by his team running away, breaking one of his legs and
smashing things up generally.
Mrs. L. POWELL returned from Kansas on Wednesday, where she had
been on a visit to her brother, Henry HARRIS.
Our democratic friend PEARSON was up from Hardin this week and
called to acknowledge his woe. He says the worst of it is he now
don't expect ot live long enough to see another democratic
president, in which prophecy we cheerfully coincide. The only
thing we feel abad about is that we did not win back from him the
hat he won from us four years ago. The only reason we didn't was
that he kept away from us this year until after election. But
betting is bad anyway, and more especially so if you lose!
DIED. At her residence in Postville, Nov. 10,
1888, Mrs. Mary LAIRD in her seventy-third year. Deceased was a
native of Scotland and came to Iowa at an early day. Thus closes
a long and useful career. Rev. THRUSH in conducting the funeral
service at the Congregational church, in a brief discourse,
showed that the great objuct of a Christian life was to learn to
live truthfully as well as to die peacefully. Mrs. LAIRD was a
devoted bible student, conscientious and faithful in the
discharge of duty.
