Mrs. Lydia A. REED and Mrs. Joseph RILEY will continue fine hair
work. Mrs. RILEY will solicit and deliver orders. Residences
opposite the Milwaukee depot. Mrs. RILEY's residence two doors
west of Mrs. REED's.
At the rate Ward & Meyer are closing out goods they will have
a very small stock to divide when they close their doors, a week
from Saturday night. They are crowded from morning until night.
Prof. SMITH was so indisposed that he had to go home to Monona on
Wednesday evening. Miss Jessie COYLE is assisting Miss FINNEY in
the highter department in the mean time.
R.A.T. MEYER informs us that he contemplates building on his
lots, corner of Lawler and Green streets, this spring. He is
figuring on a veneered store 25X100 feet, two stories high.
Mr. WILKE has sold his residence property on the south side of
town. We believe consideration was $1,000. The purchaser was a
German farmer who purposes moving to town. Mr. WILKE and family
have moved on to their farm again.
Our niece, Miss Stella HALSTED, who has been with us off and on
for two or three years attending school here, leaves for Howard
county next week. She wil teach school in the same district next
summer that she taught in last summer--her home district.
Mr. CONWAY and Mrs. CLARITY were married at the Catholic Church
here on Tuesday. We believe Mr. CONWAY has a farm in Nebraska.
David JACOBIA is moving into the SANDERS residence purchased last
fall and will be settled next week. He is suffering with the
prevalent cold epidemic.

BIRTH. Miss LEITHOLD, a very pretty young lady of rather delicate
constitution but attractive voice, arrived at the residence of
Sheriff LEITHOLD, a few days ago, which accounts for the happy
countenance Chris is wearing. Mother and baby getting along
nicely.
Mrs. Levi HUBBELL had the misfortune to slip down on the icy
sidewalk near Dr. CRAWFORD's office, last Thursday evening,
striking heavily onthe back of her head causing her to become
insensible. She was taken into Dr. CRAWFORD's office and
restoratives applied which brought her partially back to her
senses and was afterward taken home and has been confined to the
house ever since and has suffered a great deal of pain in her
head.

The first wheeled vehicles from the country this year were on our
streets Tuesday. Goodbye runners.
Bro. M.V. BURDICK caled to see us, on his way to Cresco, this
week. He is in very feeble health.
Frank ROBERTS is painting and otherwise improving his store on
the inside, preparatory to receiving his spring stock.
Mrs. Reuben DOUGLASS and little girls, of Postville, are guests
of Dr. HAMILTON for a few days --clipped from the Dubuque Sunday Herald.
Our thanks are due Mrs. Mary LAIRD for a copy of a Scotland
paper. Mrs. LAIRD is one of our most prompt paying subscribers,
never letting the advance payment run out.
Mr. A. ABEL, father of Charley, has bought of I.A. COLE, the
place known as the "Chase" house in the southwest part
of town. Consideration, $1,150 cash.
Charley BLANCHAINE informs us that the report that he withdrew
from the postoffice fight in favor of his competitor was
incorrect. He simply grew tired of the fight and withdrew.
Our old friend of a quarter of a century standing, Geo. COMBS, of
Cresco, made us glad by a visit Tuesday evening. It almost made
us young again to have a chat with him.
Miss Carrie ORR was on Monday evening elected to succeed Miss
Jennie COWLES as teacher of the grammer department of our school
for the ensuing term. There were several applicants we believe.
We are pleased to announce that Mr. and Mrs. Wm. MOTT have
returned and will take up their residence in Postville. We
believe every person in Postville will welcome them back with
sincere pleasure, as we know our household will. We believe Mr.
MOTT will take the place in the lumber yard to be vacated by Wm.
McADAM.

John FLYNN, the new postmaster of Decorah was indicted by the
grand jury of Winneshiek co, for illegal voting. He expects to be
able to show that he was naturalized in 1885, but the outward
indications are that it is doubtful.
MARRIED.
At the U.B. parsonage, in Castalia, Io., on Tuesday, March 9,
1886, by the Rev. W.D. HARTSOUGH, Mr. Louis THAYER and Miss
Maggie CONLEY, all of Winneshiek Co. Iowa.
DIED.
At the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Lucius McGHEE, near
Hardin, Io., on Sunday morning, March 14, 1886, Mrs. Asael EATON,
aged 64 yeras, 8 months and 3 days. Deceased was the mother of
nine children, five of whom, four sons and one daughter, with the
aged husband and father survive to mourn her departure. Mrs.
EATON was born in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. She, with her husband,
settled in Allamakee Co. in the year 1856, where she continued to
reside until her death. She was a kind and obliging neighbor, a
faithful and devoted wife, an affectionate mother and exemplary
christian. She died as she had lived for many years trusting in
the Savior. The memorial services were held at Bethel, near her
late home, conducted by the Rev. W.D. HARTSOUGH, of Castalia, in
the presence of the numerous relatives and a large congregation
composed mostly of old neighbors and acquaintances, who
sympathize with the bereaved friends in their affliction.
