DIED.
Mrs. Ruth Emma Jane, wife of Wm. GIRTON and only daughter of
James and Margaret MATHER, died at the home of her parents, near
Postville, January 26th, 1885. She was born Sept. 14, 1861, and
was called away under peculiarly sorrowful surroundings, leaving
her young husband and infant daughter only a few weeks old,
besides her aged father and mother, whom she had fondly hope to
care for in their declining years. Mrs. GIRTON professed the
religion of Christ several years ago at Hardin and joined the
M.E. Church.
Infant child of Wm. GIRTON died Feb. 2nd, 1884. Funeral on the
4th.
DIED.
Francis, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Augustus GILSON, of lung
fever, died Feb. 1st, 1884. Funeral was held on the 4th inst.

LOCAL ITEMS.
Elbert STILES is clerking at the Commercial House.
Jake JACOBSON visited his brother near Fayette last week.
John FINNEY has sold his lease and fixtures, and probably his
grocery stock to James SHAW, of Cresco, and will remove to
Kansas.
DIED.
At his home, near Luana, on Sunday Feb. 8th, Solomon H. OATHOUT,
aged 75 years. He leaves 7 children and numerous grand children,
besides a large circle of friends. He had been a resident of
Monona twp for 30 years. Rev. J.W. FERNER of Postville officiated
at the funeral, which took place on Friday of last week.
OBITUARY.
Frank Warner McCLELLAND was born in Plymouth, Richland county,
Ohio, Oct. 32, 1856 and died in Monona, Clayton county, Iowa,
Feb. 15th, 1885, aged 28 years, 3 months and 15 days. For many
years he resided in Clayton county, near Postville. He graduated
in the law department of the State University at Iowa City, and
practiced law in Salina, Kansas until prevented by poor health.
He was buried at Monona Monday, Feb. 16th. Thus in the prime of
manhood some are called away.
MARRIED.
By Rev. S.T. McKIM, on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1885, at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. C.H. BARNES, near Postville, their youngest daughter,
Miss Lizzie to Mr. La Motte TAYLOR, of this place. Only relatives
were present, who brought useful presents for the young people.
Mr. and Mrs. TAYLOR start in a few days for their new home in
Kansas.
At the Catholic church in Clermont, by Rev. Father HACKETT, on
tuesday, Feb. 17th, 1885. Mr. John W. MURPHY and Miss Mary
FITZSIMMONS. Mr. MURPHY and bride will soon take up residence at
Carrington, D.T. where the former has resided for the past 5
years, and where he has a fine farm, a good house and all the
conveniences for living in comfort. He was a former resident of
this section.
At the residence of Rev. J. THORNTON, of Castalia, on Feb. 18,
Mr. Oliver COOPER and Miss Myrtie McMARTIN, daughter of Mr. John
McMARTIN.

MARRIED.
At the M.E. parsonage on Friday evening, Feb 20, 1885 by Rev.
McKIM, Mr. Oliver MACKEY and Laura A. DEERING. It was a quiet
wedding, only a few friends being present.
DIED.
J.W. EARLE, of Waukon, a brother of Dr. EARLE, the merchant and
stock dealer of that city, fell dead in the store there last
Saturday evening, the result of heart disease. He had been in the
employ of Dr. EARLE for many years and the brothers were greatly
attached to each other.
Geo. F. MITCHELL, a former resident of Postville and a brother of
William MITCHELL, of this place, died at his home in Bowling
Green, Mo., recently.
