Items of Interest in Iowa
-The state seems invested with horse thieves.
-The first reunion of the Third Iowa Cavalry will take place at
Keokuk on the 18th and 19th days of October.
-Governor Sherman issued a proclamation last Monday, offering
$500 for the party or parties who assaulted the late Henry
Scribner in Des Moines last Friday.
-The good people of Fayette county raised by subscription enough
money to pay off the mortgage on the farm of marion Shepherd, who
was killed by the Barbour brothers. - Elkader Journal
Last week Tuesday, while Mr. J.T. Lavalley and his son Eddie,
about 9 years old, were taking sand from a Burr Oak sand pit, the
dirt from overhead caved in on the latter, and before the father
could get help there to get him out, the boy was dead. H.J.
Harden and a son of Dan Price, who were not far off, helped to
dig the boy out, but not till life was extinct. The voice of the
boy was heard after the caving in, telling his father to hurry,
and the father exhorted him to hold out as long as possible, to
which he replied that he could not any longer that he was dying.
It is a very sad case. - Decorah Journal
The Ossian Herald comes to us draped in mourning for the
death of its editor and publisher, Mr. F.B. Hanna, who died
suddenly last thursday morning. Mr. Hanna was a recent comer to
the county and we have not had the pleasure of meeting him; but
his death was a shock as well as a surprise. The friend who takes
up the pen for the last Herald speaks very highly of the
deceased, and his energy, ability, and upright kindly qualities.
Mr. hanna was born in Mankato, Minn. 1857, and after a liberal
education in Illinois, commenced to study law, but his health
failing, he sought out door work and purchased the Ossian herald.
His remains were taking [sic] to nora Springs for burial, by his
mother, mrs. H.M. Bennett, of that place. - Decorah Journal.
