Postville Review
Postville, Allamakee Co. Iowa
February 7, 1880.

Dr. GREEN performed a surgical operation on Mr. Van VELZER, extracting a cancer from his lip, on Monday last.

This is the shortest month in the year and still it will have five Sundays in it, probably in the interest of the girls, it being leap year.

Assessor BURLING has been around telling the people how much worldly effects they have got this week. He estimated us at $215, which is a heavy load for a newspaper man to carry.

The Board of Supervisors met promptly and contracted for a temporary Poor House building to take the place of the one destroyed by fire. It was finished and occupied last week.

Walter CLIFT, who is stopping at Beulah, met with a bad accident on Thursday of last week, while coupling cars, had his hand badly smashed. At last accounts Drs. thought the hand might be saved.

Mr. PRESCOTT tells us that Mr. Truman STODDARD formerly of this vicinity now of Lodi, Cal., lost two fingers of the left hand in a planing mill near his home, a few days since. Dr. SCOTT, formerly of Monona, repaired the damages.

The following subscribers have made us glad since our last report, for which they have our thanks:

Whatever else you miss, don't miss Rev. S.G. SMITH's great lecture Feb. 19th. It will be worth a dollar to every man, woman and child, and will only cost a quarter. Reserved seats may be secured at the City Drug Store a week in advance without extra charge. The subject will probably be "Italy and Rome", which is said to be one of his very best courses. Not one who has heard his "Men and Money" will fail to hear this lecture.

AROUND THE AREA and STATE.

DIED. August ELBLING, the oldest son of Julia ELBLING, of McGregor, was drowned while crossing the Mississippi River on skates last Sunday evening. His body was recovered on Monday morning and the funeral took place on Wednesday, some of our people going down to attend it. Young Mr. ELBLING was 20 years old and is very highly spoken of.

MARRIED. Mr. Austin D. CHURCH to Miss Alpha OATHOUT, by Rev. W.S. POTWIN, at the residence of the bride's father at Luana, Iowa. A large and happy gathering of the friends and relatives were present. May the bride for many long years enjoy the smiles and approval of the 'Church' to which she has united herself.

The McGregor News says that every time a calf is killed an ox is nipped in the bud. Supposing it isn't that kind of a calf?

We are in receipt of several copies of the Iowa State Independent, Joe EIBOECK's new Des Moines paper. It is printed in English language and is the organ of what Joe terms" personal liberty." It is a very nicely gotten up paper and should be patronized by all who are opposed to the prohibitory liquor law. Joe is an able editor, no matter whether he is on the right or wrong side of a question.
