EDITORIAL.[abstracted]
Let us ask the citizens of Postville the reasons why an enterprising town as Postville is so far behind the age as not to possess the necessary apparatus for the extinguishment of fires? Let there be organized a hook and ladder company, and let our citizens give liberally for the purpose of fitting them out with appropriate apparatus to assist in the extinguishment of fires or the saving of life and property.

DIED.
Della LEAR, of this place departed this life on the morning of the 17th inst. at 7 1/2 o'clock. Age 8 years, 6 months. Little Della had been sick for a number of weeks with the heart disease, she was during her entire illness patient, and seemed ready to go if so ordained. For many days before her death she would let no one be with her but her mother. Della was indeed an exemplary child, idolized by all that knew her. A mother and many friends are left to mourn the loss of the good little one, they have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

At Castalia, on the afternoon of Feb. 16th, Mr. A. WARRING. The deceased was about 80 years of age, brother of the wife of Wm. PIERCE, of that place.

Mrs. J.A. JOHNSON is prepared to do all kinds of work in the dressmaking line, up stairs in the Comstock building.

Mr. H.P. DAWES of this place, has sold his stock of furniture, and leased his building to Messrs. PRATT & F.M. CLARK, of Waukon. These gentlemen have long been in the furniture business and come well recommended.

Mr. John KELLEY, and Mr. ROE, just as they were returning form Waukon a few days ago, met with quite an accident. Just as they arrived in Postville the cutter was over turned and Mr. KELLEY fell on the bottom side with Mr. ROE's horses and cutter on top. The result was that Mr. KELLEY was severely bruised, has not been able to get out of the house we believe, since. We are glad to know he is getting better.

The N.E.I.A.S. annual meeting was held at Mott's Hall on last Friday afternoon. The following is the list of officers for 1874: Judge C.T. GRANGER, President; C. LOWER, vice president; Jas. McEWEN, secretary; Jacob LEUI, treasurer.
