WWI Draft News for Iowa County

Extracted from the Williamsburg Journal Tribune, Iowa County, Iowa. 1917-1918.

"It appears as though Iowa county did things a little different than other counties, and pulled almost all the draft names at the initial drawing. Subsequent draftees were pulled from that list. A little unusual. Also noted that some of the supplementary draft lists contained extensive errors in the original. I transcribed them as they were, but was compelled to circle back to WWI Draft Registrations in an attempt to provide the actual names of the men. That has been annotated as such in the transcription." - Joe Conroy

Draft Registration.

General Requirements for the Filling in of the Military Lists on June 5th.

The registration, in connection with the military draft, will be made all over the country on June 5th; the places of registry will be the usual voting places in all the several precincts, and the books will be open from seven in the morning until nine at night. The work in Iowa is in charge of the sheriffs of the different counties, and Sheriff Reed has arranged for the following registry clerks for Williamsburg and Troy township precincts:
Williamsburg: At city hall; clerks J. N. Beilstein, J. P. Gaffney and A. B. Ogden.
Troy Precinct: At Citizens Savings bank hall, Williamsburg; clerks D. M. Evans and John Kuch.

In Other Precincts.
The registration clerks in other precincts of the county are as follows:
Hilton township: -- Asa Hall, Harvey Oldaker.
Iowa: -- John Burgy, Henry Schmidt and August Wiebold.
Greene: -- T. F. Hannon, Eardley Bell.
York: -- J. H. Reynolds, C. T. Holden.
Fillmore: -- John Carvill, John Carroll, M. A. Tiernan.
Pilot: -- Will Scandridge, J. J. Bean.
Lincoln: -- H. N. Bleedner, C. H. Wiedow.
Sumner: -- J. D. Misbach, Robert Scandridge.
English: -- O. A. King, L. W. Hatter.
Dayton: -- John McClune, Will Messenger.
Hartford: -- Ben Jones, Will Kinsler.
Marengo township: -- Will Whitehill, Otto Gode, John Smoley.
Marengo City, 1st Ward: -- Dale Bean, Ed Paine, Charles Peters.
Marengo City, 2nd Ward: -- Robert Hibbs, J. C. Baker, F. H. Karsten.
Marengo City, 3rd Ward: -- Will Gates, Byron Goldthwaite.

Who Must Register.
The registration law requires the listing of every male citizen between the ages of 21 and 30 inclusive; it makes no difference whether married or single, fit or unfit, or whether the citizen comes under any of the exemptions; every one between the ages named must register, and the penalty for failing or refusing to register is very severe, and all violations of the order will be certainly punished. The law is operated under the military statutes and no "fooling" will be tolerated or permitted.
Many must register who, of course, will have no difficulty in establishing the fact that they are exempt from service; all such must fill in on the blanks furnished their claims for exemption from the draft, stating plainly the grounds upon which such exemption is based. These claims will be later passed upon by a legally constituted authority, so that all claims will be accorded the fullest respect and consideration.

National Army Draft List.

The following is the list of Iowa County draft numbers selected from the first 3,000 names drawn. As many of the numbers in this drawing were above the highest number registered in Iowa County, the list of course, does not contain three thousand names. This is the main point: if three thousand numbers are to be drawn, the following will be the list from Iowa county.
Iowa County's quota was 201, the credit for volunteer enlistments reduces this to 43, so it is an easy matter to figure out the liability according to the numbers.
