ALBERTON. Laid out as a town in 1857 in section 10 Dayton
Twp. , but never built up.
AMBROSE. A post office (1897-1900) in section 28 Dayton
Twp.
AMANA COLONIES.
BOLTONVILLE. A post office (1891-1873) in the southwest
corner of Section 26, Iowa Twp.
CARTER. A post office (1881-1885) in the southwestern
part of Fillmore Twp., about three miles northeast of the present town of North English.
CONO. A post office (1855-63) in the eastern part of Cono
Twp.
DAYTON. A town laid out in section 1 of Cono Twp. Post
office 1857-59.
DOVER. Laid out as a town in 1857 on the south line of
section 6 Honey Creek Twp. ,but no town developed. It is shown on maps as late as 1875
as a post office.
DOWNARDS. In the eastern part of Sumner Twp. Post office
1855-59.
FOX. In the southwest part of Iowa Twp. according to an
1887 map.
FOOTE. In the southeastern part of section 35, Fillmore
Twp. on the Keokuk County line. Post office 1863-1900.
FREMONT. Laid out as a town in 1857 in the northern part
of section 23 Fillmore Twp. ,but never materialized.
GENOA BLUFFS. A town in the southeastern part of section
32 and southwestern part of section 33, Sumner Twp. It was laid out in 1855 and was
prosperous, at one time aspiring to be the county seat. Post office, 1859-1900.
GREENE CENTER. In the south central part of Greene Twp.
Post office, 1889-1900.
HEDGE. A post office (1881-1900) in the north central
part of Dayton Township.
HINKLETOWN. Name of the hamlet at the location of the
post office of Foote (see above.)
IONE. In the northern part of Greene Twp. Listed as post
office in the U.S. Official Register in 1854 and shown on maps as late as 1869.
LADORA. Incorporated city.
MARENGO. Marengo was incorporated in July 1859, although
it had been the county seat since August 1845. The city was named because of its resemblance
to a river valley in Italy where Napoleon won the Battle of Marengo in 1803. For many
years, Marengo was the commercial center of Iowa County due to its proximity to the
Iowa River.
MILLERSBURG. Incorporated city.
MORIAH. A post office (I873-76) in the southwestern part
of Honey Creek Twp.
MUSQUAKA. A post office (1875-93) in the northeastern
part of section 29, Dayton Twp.
NEVADA. Early name of North English.
NORTH ENGLISH. Incorporated city. See Carter, Nevada,
Soaptown
PARNELL. Incorporated city.
PRAIRIE CREEK. A post office (1855-67) in the western
part of Honey Creek Twp. near the Poweshiek County line.
RIVERDALE. Near the northwest corner of Honey Creek Twp.
Post office, 1873-76.
SOAPTOWN. A common name applied to North English in its
pioneer days.
STELAPOLIS. The name of the post office at Williamsburg
1861-l880, according to the U.S. Official Register.
VICTOR. Incorporated city.
WEST PILOT. In section 15, Pilot Twp. Post office, 1872-89.
WEST TROY. On west line of section 19, Troy Twp. Post
1873-81.
WILLIAMSBURG. Incorporated city.
WILSON. The original name of the present town Victor.
The name was changed in 1862 when the post office at Victor, in existence since 1854
was moved to be near the new railroad depot.
YORK CENTER. In the western part of section 9, York Twp.
