Iowa County Cemetery Stones and History 1844-1975 (manuscript) by Pauline Lillie

                                                                      p.1
                    Dane Cemetery or West York
                          History by Pauline Lillie

Location
On blacktop Hy. -W- about 4 miles east of Williamsburg; York township
79, Range 9, Section 7.

History
According to 1881 Ia.Co. History p. 694; Refers to as the oldest in town-
ship and contained about 40 graves. On Atlas of 1875 p. 9 this is listed
on the C.F. Daniel, and Atlas 1900 p. 23 cemetery north side of road, south-
west corner on the Charles F. Dane property; 1915 Atlas is listed on Henry
Wardenburg. In Vol. I. of History of 1915 p. 206; The first interment
here was a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ira Waldo about 1855; However we found
no stones for her, but one for the mother Peggy wife of Ira, d. October 30
1859, age 32 yr. The Dane families are not listed in the 1850 Census.
in Iowa County.

There are indications a number have been removed; Some relatives are exist-
ing that have ancestors buried here. These are the same group of settlers
who have buried people in the cemetery north, known as Pleasant Ridge -
Baptist, and their lives may be found in the histories of townships of
York-Hilton-Iowa- and Troy, and History of 1915 and the Biographical Rec-
ord, of Johnson-Poweshiek- Iowa Counties. The descendants probably are
not aware of the relationships.

Buried a Number of Civil War Veterans, according to a quick check ;Are
Jacob Brill Co. "I" 6th Iowa Volunteer Calvary enlisted at age 36 in 1862
Iro Waldo same company at age 36 in 1862
Edward Blasier at age 20 in 1861 Co. "H" - 4th Iowa Volunteer Calv.
and possibly James M. Hopwood Co. "F" 22nd Iowa Vol. Ing.
These may be found in Vol. I. History of Iowa Co. 1915

There are 5 Civil War Markers and one Womens Relief Corp 1880: Could be
more, for there are two on the Hopwood lot- one burial- probably that of
Dr. N.W. Hopwood, and the other might be for James M. Hopwood. Those in-
terested should check these out extensively.

The Blasier lots are neglected, even though they were probably the most
outstanding citizens this area of Williamsburg ever had. Edward Blasier
has a large stone with "Knight Templar" marker engraved on the back. He
was the Commander of Grand Army of Republic, and life is extensively given
in the History of Johnson Poweshiek and Iowa County (Biographical Rec-
ord) reads like a Whos- Who-

Reason Daughters of American Revolution checked this cemetery and re-
copied, reported there were 3 DAR MARKERS; It proved they were GAR
The possibility existed because the Blasier, and Howes lineage back to
a Revolution Patriotic- does exist.

Condition
When I copied this Dane cemetery first in 1959 the center was mowed,
and along west end near Blasier-Howes- and others started to grow up,
Since then a tree has fallen, toppled some stones, and animals have
worked up dirt. It is well mowed in center, and weeds at a minimun. A
few hours of pick up-cut out under trees growin-reset stones toppled-
should be done.
