LADORA CEMETERY OR
North Sumner
History by Pauline Lillie
Location
Section 18, township Sumner 80 Range 11, south of town of Ladora,
one mile on black top, turn first road east ¼ mile.
History
This cemetery came into being before the town of Ladora; Used
then and now by both Hartford and Sumner township. incorporated
as North Sumner Township Cemetery. Was purchased from Nicholas
and Rosanna Mouser in November 4, 1867
The oldest burial dates are those of the Kitchen families, who
probably were moved here, from the old Kitchen Cemetery which
was in fact ¼ mile east. The Kitchens were the earliest of families
(1843). Some point in time I hope to grant the Kitchen settlement
and mill their rightfull place in Iowa County History.
This is one of the loveliest of cemeteries. Well kept, and maint-
ained. At one time it had big old trees, which were removed and
left the place desolate. The wife of the township Clerk Mrs. Frank
Danskin took over the project of getting funds to landscape, and
continued to fix all aspects of the place. After the drive for
money ended it was landscaped, made arrangements for additional
land, on the north side making it easy to drive around. Painted
fence, reset others; The trustees reset many stones, on new bases,
cleaned other, and a number were recut (regardless of known ancest-
ors or not). There are no doubt burials that do not have stones.
One was recently discovered buried here without a stone by his desc-
endant, outside of the state, and place a stone. Many of the early
settlers who bought lots no longer live around, moved on so it is
difficult to know if they ever had a burial on them.
Legal
On the 1st. of March 1871 deed recorded by M.W. Stover in Book 26
page 74, Iowa County: From N. Mouser to trustees of North Sumner
township for the sun of $ 4.00- Trustees were M. Shaull, Wm. Weiks
and W?M.G. York, as such; - Described as Commencing 71 rods west
of the NE corner of Section 18 Township 80 Range 11, West 26½ rods
then South 10 rods 2 ft. then E 11 rods and 81½ ft. thence N. 58
rods- East 18½ rods to beginning.
Condition
Given in history of cemetery.
Remarks
When I copied and rechecked the second time August 1975- little
difference than in August of 1962. Most families are related and
only few will be found in Sumner- Hartford- or Marengo township
biographies, because these people were hard working for them to
spend money to purchase a county history for prestige would be
considered; This cemetery had a paupers lot behind tool shed.
