MAKE TREE CEMETERY p. 1
History by Pauline Lillie (Marengo Twp.)
Located;
Section 32 Township 81, Range 11, four miles west of Marengo
On Hy. 212; South - one mile- North of the Iowa Valley Horse
Stables- part of land owned by them to-day (1976)
History;
First I heard of a cemetery having been up there was in 1966, from
Iva Beadshear who lived in Section 30 (2 mi. west) and told me of
one big stone that of Lydia Nichlson, who was buried there That
some were moved to Marengo and Koszta cemeteries; No one moved her
stone, so it was brought over to an Uncle (Sam Nichlson) who lived
across the road from Iva Beadshear in Honey Creek twp. Sec. 36;
Stone was deumped off into their chicken yard, where it lay for
years until Mrs. Nichlson had it moved out in back of farm into
a grassway and covered.
Another stone was in the barn, name of Johnson who owned the land
at one time. My informer remembered it being there and thought it
probably was that of Jas. Johnson or wife. Benjamin F. Tompkins
married Jeanette Johnson in 1861; Descendants of this family live
here to-day. That the cemetery was across the road and located near
a large grove of red maple trees.
For this reason I named the cemetery that- for want of anything
better. Have done no research into background of families, and they
do their own.
Remarks;
To-day it is all a cultivated field, and in my opinion most of the
bodies still are there, for early days they did not embalm, and then
many would not have stones, only slabs.
To give point of time for earliest burial is impossible- my guess
would be from 1860 - to 1900 with removal probably before 1920.
