Iowa County Cemetery Stones and History 1844-1975 (manuscript) by Pauline Lillie

                    OLD CATHOLIC CEMETERY p. 1
                                                  (Hilton twp.)
                              By Pauline Lillie

Location
Section 6, Hilton 80 Township Range 10. About a mile east and ½ mile
south of Hy. V. 66 out of Marengo.

History
The 1874 Atlas p. 19 Cemetery of 5 acres appears in the SE corner
of Section -6- on the O. Dillin farm of 35 acres. The 1900 Atlas
page 35 would be on the John Howlett Land. They lived here for
many years, and it may have been moved at that time, or soon after-
wards when the James Edwards owned the lan[d] in 1915; It appears
only once on the Atlas- that of 1874.

This area often called Fairview; A rural School was in this section,
also the M. E. Church and Parsonage, on the corner. At one time a
road extended almost through the section, past the cemetery, along
Hilton Creek on the Bluff. Supposedly the survey was defective and
the road never materalized.

Now 1976 on the Jasper Lillie farm, same as when I check in 1959.
It was moved to the Catholic Cemetery east of I.O.O.F. near Marengo
on Hy. 6; Most relatives moved their own, but a few were left and
the Catholic Church at Marengo had them moved. This is the little
group that is together in one corner of the Catholic Cemetery near
Highway 6.

The original was a most beautiful place, but there is nothing to see
here now. It was "full of pitted holes" the day I looked it over.
Is at a dead end road, and no one should attempt to visit the place
without owners permission. However there is always the possibility
that some one was buried there without a stone- so that grave would
be lost.

This spot is only a short distance off the beaten path of the old
Stage Coach Road- the main highway of the early times.
