Iowa County Cemetery Stones and History 1844-1975 (manuscript) by Pauline Lillie

RICORD CEMETERY (Greene twp.) p. 1
                              History by Pauline Lillie

Located
Section 3 Greene 78 Township, Range 9, Off Hy. 52 known as the Black
Diamond Trail - East about 1½ miles from old town of Holbrook; Back
off in the timber above Old Mans Creek on side hill

History
The Rural Schoolhouse (known as Oakland) is up the hill from the cem-
etery; The Schoolhouse is on the black top, but closed for many years
I talked to several of the early teachers, but they never knew of the
cemetery, and said the children played all over down there. Prob-
ably no more than 8 or 10 graves. No stones were visible by 1860 accord-
ing to Mr. Hannon when I talked to him in 1970 when doing an article on
the Ricords. He said it had been in the family since then, and he could
show me where it was. No one has ever come up with any names, which to
me is odd, for something should by now have filtered down from some of
the families.

This was the home of Edward and wife Jane (Gilliam) Ricord and they never
buried any one here. Their first death was that of little Ann born May 20
1841 in Indiana, died August 26, 1848 here. Buried over in Pleasant Hill
Cemetery, Johnson County (known as Joe Town) and later the rest of the
Ricord family in same lot.

This township of Section 3 had so many Hannon ownerships, it is difficult
to tell for sure on which one of the small plots on the north side of the
black top (acreages) that the cemetery was located. The 1900 Atlas gives
this section John Hannon - P.A.- M.J. and F.T. and by 1950 others, To-day
1976 are Mrs. Edmond Hannon-Stella and Thomas Hannon, et al. Most of the
small plots are moving into larger groups.

The Ricords were close to the Johnson County line, and this route was
well traveled by those from Iowa City going west. Also it was settled
by many early families for Holbrook was in Section 4, and this area was
called "Ricord" or "Old Mans Settlement.". For this reason I have no
idea who is buried there.

Researched by Pauline Lillie - ladora.
