mcbuttree.jpg (1991 bytes)  Was just doing some memory jogging and I have so many fond memories growing up in Ida County.  I think Christmas is the one that always comes mind first any time of year.  Grandpa and Grandma Mortensen lived in the next section from us south east of Batlle Creek.  In the winter I can remember going to their house across the fences (under the snow of course) in our lumber wagon with the big black work horses, Shub who had a white blaze down his face and
his mate Queen.  They would glide us across the snow and we'd get to Grandma's and head for the old cookstove to get warmed up.
Special things happened at Christmas, always a yummy dinner including Aunt Betty(Mortensen) Welte's homemade baked beans.  The children always prepared some kind of program for the adults which included singing and playing out
the story of Christmas.  Our reward was a sack full of goodies, popcorn balls, chocolate candy, a piece of fruit and candy cane.As the years went by we moved to Cushing and Grandpa and Grandma moved but we still keep the tradition of Christmas for many years to come.  Grandparents are gone now as are two of their daughters, Betty and Phyllis.   Children grew up, married and have children and grandchildren of their own.  I hope that they will have a tradition or traditions to share with their families in the coming years.
