January 6,1887

Memorial services in honor of General Logan were held at the M.E. Church last Sunday. The shcurhc was full. The audience ws addressed by Rev. Cline and Mssrs. Schleiter and Rollins. The General was a member of Mr. Clines Church when he was the pastor at Carbondale, Illinois. Mr. Rollins was in the general command during the war and Mr. Schleiter, a near neighbor. A large picture of the general was on an easel back of the pulpit. It was the work of W.C. Zimpleman drawn on muslin with black crayo9n and by those who had seen General Logan said it was a very correct likeness.

The four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bauer, died of lung fever last Friday afternoon after a weeks illness. The funeral took place on Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Macomber wish to express their heartfelt thanks to their friends and neighbors for their sympathy and help in their recent affliction, that of their daughter, Blanche.
She was the eldest daughter of Judge Macomber and had just turned 13. Last Thursday aftrernoon at school, she was getting a drink at the hydrant and slipped and lost her balance and hurt her ankle, but not serious enough so that she complained. She attended her school duties for the balance of the forenoon and went home at noon, ate dinner and returned to school without saying anything about it. About 3 o'clock she asked permission to the teacher, Miss Meacham to go home as she was not feeling well. She went home and told her mother that she had sprained her ankel and that it pained her very much. Mrs. Macomber examined the injured member and found it swollen, but didn't consider it serious. The swelling increased and in a short time the patient became feverish and the doctor was sent fo. On Friday night Mrs. Macomber telegraphed the Judge to come hom, not on account of Blanche's condition, for it was still thought she was in no danger, but because their little son was sick. The Judge got home at 11 o'clock Friday night. The next morning Blanche was delirious and continued in that state until she died Monday evening at 7 o'clock.
When the doctor called on Saturday morning, her temperature was 104 and the fever continued until it developed into cerbro-spinal menigitis, which was the direct casue of her death.
She was always a studious child, beyond her years. She was also taking music lessons. She was not strong physically and her sedentary habits and close application to study, probably helped develop the cause which produced her death. She was loved by her teacher and schoolmates and will be missed.
Funeral services were at the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday at 2. The church was so full that many were turned away, even the standing room in the aisles and vestiblule being full.
The remains were placed in the cemetery at this place.

February 24,1887

Last Friday a very painful and sad accident happened at the home of Wiliam Payson, south of town which resulted in the death of his three years old daughter.
While Mrs. Payson was engaged in her domestic duties she had occasion to go out after a pail of water and left her two children alone in the kitchen.  During her absence the clothes on the youngest caughter fire (it was supposed from the stove) and she was called to the house by the child's screams.  When she arrived the door was locked and she was compelled to gain entrance through a window, but, before she could reach the unfortunate child, one side of its body and head became severly burned. Medical aid was summoned and everything possible was done to relieve the little ones suffering, but all in vain. Death came Saturday at 5 p.m.   Had the mother been able to come to the childs help sooner the affair might not have been terminated so seriously. It is thought the fact the door was locked was that the children were playing and locked the door. (Holstein, Iowa)

Frank McMally, rushing through our streets yesterday like mad and when we attempted to say hello he put us off with a majestic wave of his hand and said as he hurried by "Don't stop me!  We've got a 10 lb girl at our house and I have no time to be fooling around here?  I must get out and see how she is getting along. Tell the boys I am loaded with Havanas".

Myrtle E., the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Patrick, died last Friday   morning of congestion of the brain, after a short illness.  Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Saturday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. A.E. Smith.   In spite of the severe weather, the church was filled with sympathizing friends and neighbors. The remains were placed in the cemetery on the hill

We see by the Battle Creek Times that Miss Nettie Lund, formerly of this county, died from consumption, on the 9th day of February at the home of her parents in Daytona, Florida. She was about 19 years old and was a sociable, loving, christian lady.

An indictment has been found against Fred Oldenberg for the murder that occurred last year. The trial is set for next Monday. Jas C. Walter and C.W. Rollins will conduct the prosecution and Warren and Buchanan, Jay D. Miller and Foster, of Chicago will take charge of the defense.

Married March 16,1887, by A.M. Jacob, esq., George F. Seibert of Coleridge, Nebraska to Mary E. Ambler of Ida County. The ceremony was performed at the hospital home of Mrs. M.P. Conard, according to the impressive marriage services of the Friends of the Quakers. An appropriate meal took place.
The groom is a progressive and industrious young farmer of Coleridge and the bride is one of Ida Counties  most popular and accomplished teachers.

H.C. Patrick and sister Mrs. George Phillips, returned Tuesday from Chicago where they went, as announced last week, in answer of a telegram that their father was seriously ill and could not live.  When they got their he was very low, but recognized them. He died the next morning.

Mr. William C. Zimpleman and Flora E. Beebe, were married last evening, April 6th, in the presence of about 100 invited guests at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Beebe on 2nd street. The ceremony was performed by Rev. C.E. Cline of the M.E. Church.  After the ceremony a pleasant hour of socializing then supper was served.   The older people went next door to Mr. H. Hansen Photographic Parlors and partook of the good things prepared, the younger ones waited until later.

A little girl of Levi McKernan, who lives in old town, died last Sunday of whooping cough, she was buried on Monday. Rev. Cline conducted the service.

J.H. Faus was married last Tuesday evening to Edith Martin at the home of the bride's father, Geo. Martin of Clinton Township, Sac County, by Rev. J.L. Clark of Illinois.
Harvey is a industrious and trustworthy young man and is deserving of an estimable helpmate.  They will go to housekeeping in Mr. Faus aunt, Mrs. C.R. Faus house in Moorehead's addition, south of the M.E. Church. They will arrive here next Saturday.

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. McNally, of Battle Twp., died last week and buried on Sudnay in the cemetery of this place. Rev. Nicholl officiated.

Married on Sunday afternoon, April 10th, at the residence of the brides father, Samuel Rupert in Logan Twp., Orren S. Stauffer and Elizabeth King. Rev. C. E. Cline officiated. The ceremaony was performed in the presence of a few close friends and relatives. It took place between 2-3 o'clock at which time a "feast of fat things" was served, which in our opinion is hard to beat.

Charles Morey, a brother of Mrs. T.S. Snell of Ida Grove and of J.H. Morey, who resides east of town, died of a combination of diseases last Friday, April 8th, at his home in Lucky Valley, Woodbury County. His remains were laid to rest in the Battle Creek Cemetery last Saturday. He was about 18 years old.

Michael Welsh, an old gentleman who lived on William Wilkinson's farm, died Tuesday of cancer of the spleen and buried in the Catholic Cemetery.  he is spoken of us an exemplorary old gentleman and severly honest in all his dealings with his fellows.

Last Friday, a man about 72 years arrived on a freight train from teh west in such a very destitude and sickly condition that he was unable to help himself in the least.   he was taken to comfortable quarters and a doctor was summoned but was found to be beyond assistance and at 11 o'clock that night he died.  He was so weak he could hardly talk, but did manage to say the name Tom Porter, Rock Township.  In his pocket was a letter from Doctor J. Werthner of Marion County, Kansas stating that the bearer was suffering from an incurable disease and that he was trying to return to his relatives in Germany. The body was buried in the cemetery east of town on Sunday. (Holstein Advance)

Miss Minnie Froelich of Battle Township, was adjuged insane last Monday and the Sheriff took her to the asylum at Independence.  Her special delusion was that witches were after her and she always had boiling water in her room to throw on them and she always insisted on taking a hoe or rake or some weapon of defense to bed with her so she would always be ready to defend herself.

Last Friday, Mrs. W.C. Farquhar received a telegram from Iowa County that her mother, who has been sick a long time, had died on Thursday. She received the message just 5 minutes to late for her to catch the 11 o'clock train eat and had to wait until the 6 o'clock train the next morning.

Mrs. Miller, wife of John S. Miller of Correctionville, brother of J.D. and William C. Miller, of this city, died at her home in Correctionville last Monday morning after an sickness of but a few days.  Mr. and Mrs. Miller, were paking up their household goods last Thursday, preparing to move to Kansas and as soon as Mr. Miller should have closed up his business and they had them nearly ready when Mrs. Miller was taken with a chill, followed by a fever of over 106. Before her death occurred, as before stated, on Monday the day she intended to start for a visit with her parents in Missouri.  Jay D. Miller and Dr. Moorehead were over there Saturday and she was getting along very well. On Monday morning, Jay D. Miller telegraphed Dr. Moorehead that she could not live 24 hours. He and Dr. Heilman started for Correctionville at once, but she died before they reached her.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday.

Cyrus Folkins, who has been in the county a number of years and who was well known, especially to people of Silver Creek, died last Sunday morning of inflamation of the bowels. The funeral was at the house on the Sanford Place at 9 o'clcok Monday morning. The deceased leaves a widow to mourn his loss.

It is our duty to chronicle the death of Mr. E. Purcell, brother of our townsman, J.N. Pursell, at whose home he was cared for during his brief illness. he was buried by the Society of the I.O.O.F. of which he was a member, on Wednesday and from whom he received every care and attention possible during his illness. Rev. J.W.C. Gibson, pastor of the M.E. Church of this place, received the sad news by telegraph last Sunday of the death of his mother in Canada. He in company with his sister, Miss Agnes, left on Sunday nights Chicago Express for their home to be present at the opsequies. Rev. Gibson will soon return to Battle Creek, while Miss Gibson will remain in Canada. (Battle Creek News)

A little girl of Carl Hensen's died last Sunday and was buried Monday afternoon with Rev. C.E. Cline officiating. That same afternoon he conducted funeral services for John Boye who lives in the grove on the hill.

Michael J. Scanlan of Ida Grove and Miss Nellie E. Mahoney of Kilrush, Ireland were married yesterday in the Catholic Church. Moody, as he is called by his acquaintances, came from Ireland five years ago and has worked in this place and Denison for the Northwestern Railroad.  His bride, we understand, has been in New York for a year with relatives.

Mrs. E. F. Clark died last Tuesday at the home of her brother, Alex Quail, 2 miles west of town.  The deceased was a confined invalid, consumption being the disease for several years and bedridden.  She came from Pennsylvania about six weeks ago to spend the summer here.
Funeral services were held at the house this morning by Rev. A.E. Smith and the remains were send to her old home in Washington, Pennsylvania for burial. Robert Quail accompanied the body.

Mrs. C.N. Clark and J.L. Clark returned home from Linn County where they have been since receiving a telegram and illness of Mrs. Clark's father, William Weeks of Central City. He was an old man in his 80th year. He was dead when they arrived at Central City, having died the night before.

Married-Tuesday, August 16,1887 at the residence of the brides sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Rogers of Battle Creek, Rev. A.C. Keeler officiating, Mr. H. McQuillen of Galva and Miss Cornelia Chapin of this place.
Mr. McQuillen is one of Ida Counties live and intelligent young farmer, owning a farm with a residence that is all furnished and ready for housekeeping. Miss Chapin is a sister of Mrs. Joseph Rogers and A.G. Chapin of this place and is an intelligent and handsome young school marm who has taught a number of schools in various parts of this county and has always given the bes of satisfaction.

August 25,1887 ERA

Last Saturday afternoon during a severe thunderstorm, F.R. Moorehead's house on his farm N.E. of town was struck by lightining and burned to the ground with everything contained in it, except a cookstove and some kitchen furniture.  Lightning struck the main part of the building with immediate fire taking place so that nothing in that part could be saved. The house was valued at about $1,200. and was insured for $750.00.  George Schade and family were living in the home at the time but were not hurt. 
Mr. Schades household goods were insured for enough so that with what was saved he will not be out much.  He lost $60.00 cash which was in a pocket of his trousers which hung in the bedroom, which Mrs. Schade knew nothing about, but even if she had, it was not probable that it could have been saved

A Bouncing, handsome, 8 pound lady arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Bleakly on Sunday at 12 o'clock.

Last Friday evening, James Johnson, father of Mrs. Neil Hansen, departed this life at the residence of his daughter on 2nd Street.  The old gentleman had been a great sufferer for years and a few months ago, after the death of his aged wife, he came to Ida Grove to pass his remaining days with his daughter, Belle.
His acquantanceship in this communitiy was not great and while he was a constant sufferer, and death to him, instead of being a cruel monster, was an angel of mercy, coming to him and releasing him of his spirit from bondage of earthly trials and sufferings, incident to old age and bearing it up to the realms of infinite bliss, where there is rest, sweet rest for all weary and aged, and afflicted pilgrims to the heavenly city.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Hansen last Saturday evening at 7:30, conducted by Rev. C.E. Cline with the remains in charge of Miss Cassie Johnson of Battle Creek, another daughter of the deceased, were they were taken to Marengo, Iowa for burial, the former home of the deceased. He will be laid to rest beside his companion who preceded him to the heavenly home.
James Johnson, son of James and Jane Johnson, was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky on May 16,1814 and died at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 10 days.  He immigrated with his parents to Jackson County, Indiana, where he was married to Jerusha Brannon in 1838.  At this place he moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where he has lived ever since, except about 5 years in Tama County.
Four children were born to them during their residence in Iowa.  He was in early life an active working member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His health began to fail about 12 years ago from rheumatism.  Two years ago he had a stroke of paralysis, since which time his health has rapidly broken, until two weeks ago when he was confined to his bed and gradually passed away.

Mr. Jas Spaulding, who came here last winter has been living with his son in the old Stumbaugh house north of the depot, was found dead in bed Sunday morning last.  He went to bed in apparently good health at 10:00 o'clock Saturday night and when his son went to call him at 6:30 the next morning he was dead.  A post mortem examination was made by Dr. Eckmann who pronounced the cause of death, heart disease.  His son claims he has never been bothered by the disease to his knowledge.
The deceased was 63 years old and leaves three children, Lee and Lena Spaulding of this place and Chas. Spaulding who lives in Clinton County. 
Funeral services took place Monday afternoon and the remains interred in a cemetery east of Holstein.

F.A. Lusk is exceedingly happy this week and it is probable that his customers will find him disposed to offere extra good bargains.  Mrs. Lusk presented him with a bouncing baby boy on Tuesday night.

P.F. Gallagher and Miss Mae Baird were married at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Neil Hansen last Sunday morning by Rev. C.E. Cline.  Both parties are well known in the area.
The groom has for a number of years been connected with the commercial Livery Stable as its proprietor and the bride since January has been the efficient assistand Postmaster at this place.

While at the Corn Palace last week we learned through a friend, who had seen Mrs. Richard Johnson, formerly of this place, that Mr. Johnson had been sick for a year and had died and was buried four weeks before that time, last Friday. (Corn Palace was at Sioux City)

Charles Obrecht, of Blaine, is the second man in Ida County this week that we have heard of who has the proud distinction of being the father of twins. His wife presented him two girls last Monday night.

Mrs. Pattee has been adjusted insane by the insane commissioners.  Trouble is the caus of her misfortune and it is reported her malady was intensified by the action of a plot of hoodlums on Halloween nigh in frightning her out of her house.

G.B. Gilbert's father, quite an old gentleman, died last Thursday at his son's residence in Silver Creek Township and was buried on Friday.

Died-Just before going to press (Wednesday), we receive the sad news that Mrs. W.C. Moorehead died last night after a short illness.  Funeral services will be tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 o'clock on the Moorehead homestead.

December 1,1887 ERA

Mrs. W.C. Moorehead's brief mention of whose sudden death was made last week, was 25 years old and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Bassett.  At about ten years of age she came to this place with her parents from Jefferson, to which place they had moved from Zanesville, Ohio.
She married W.C. Moorehead about four years ago. Four weeks before her death she had given birth to a son, her first. She was getting along fine and was up and about the house until a few days before her death, when she was suddenly taken with acute peritonitis and inspite of all that could be done, she died Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock.
Funeral services were held from the house at 2 o'clock and was conducted by Rev. Peter Fox of the Episcopal Chruch and was assisted by Rev. L.H. Woodworth of Forth Dodge. The remains were laid in the cemetery on the hill.
We understand Mr. Mooreheads mother will go to live with him and that Mrs. N. Hubbard has been engaged as housekeeper and to take care of the young son, who is thus sadly bereft of his mother.

A Swede named Carlson was arrested and brought to town Tuesday for attempting to steal a horse in Hayes Township last Sunday.  He was discharged as a case was not proven against him.   He claimed that the horse was loose and was bothering his team so that he could not manage them, so he caught it and tied it behind his buggy.

D.H. Snoke, Judge Macomber's Court Reporter, went to the eastern part of the state to stay during the holidays. He is to be married today at Muscatine. HIs brother Frank left via Des Moines at which latter place he will visit friends.

Married-December 26, 1887 at 7 o'clock by Rev. C.E. Cline at the resident of the brides father, Thompson Hagler, Mrs. John Schroeppel of Armour, South Dakota to Miss Ella Hagler of Ida G rove.   The wedding was reported to us by Rev. Cline who also said that it was one of the most pleasant and enjoyable affairs he has attended in some time.  The young couple will visit friend and relatives in Galva and then go to Dakota where Mr. Schroeppel is engaged in farming.

Married-John F. Schmidt and Agnes Brechwald were married last Thursday and took the afternoon train for the east.
