Stephen L. Gilbert and son Fred Gilbert

Stephen Levaneor Gilbert came to Jones County, Iowa in 1857 where he operated a cheese factory.  He later became involved in grain, cheese, and the creamery business in Onslow.  He moved to Maple Township in 1888 and began farming.  Married Evelyn Marie Seaman

Brothers of S L Gilbert:  Fred Gilbert-wounded at Vicksburg, Amos Gilbert-prisoner at Andersonville and died.

Fred D. Gilbert:  Farmer, Maple Township, Ida County, Iowa.  Born 26 September 1856 in Herkimer County, New York. Son of Stephen Levaneor Gilbert and Eveline (Seaman) Gilbert, natives of New York.  Paternal Grandfather:  Amos Gilbert.  Maternal Grandfather:  Jacob Seaman.  On 1 Jan 1881 he married Mary E Doherty in Jones County, Iowa. Mary Doherty was a native of Springfield, Massachusetts.  Mary was the daughter of P.F. and Mary Doherty.
