   Newspapers & Articles

Many county libraries, genealogical, and/or historical societies have county newspapers on microfilm going back to the beginning of the counties. They may also have some indexed. The Iowa State Historical Society also has many newspapers on microfilm The Iowa Genealogical Society has indexes to some county newspapers.

General AdGeneral Ads were placed in early newspapers. This one was placed by the American Educational Aid Association of Englewood, IL, and asks that you write if you are interested in one of their children.

Ads like those placed by the Children's Aid Society basically stated that a company of children needing homes would arrive in your town.

Most of them state something similar to the following:

"The object of the coming of these children is to find homes in your midst, especially among farmers, where they may enjoy a happy and wholesome family life, where kind care, good example and moral training will fit them for a life of self support and usefulness. They come under the auspices of the New York Children's Aid Society, by whom they have been tested and found to be well meaning and willing boys and girls.

The conditions are that they shall be properly clothed and treated as members of the family, sent to school according to the school law of the state, and remain in the family until they are eighteen years of age. At the expiration of the time specified it is hoped that arrangements can be made whereby they may be able to remain in the family indefinitely. The society retains the right to remove a child at any time for just cause, and agrees to remove any found unsatisfactory after being notified."

This may be followed by a list of 'well known' citizens who have agreed to take applications. If you have copies of notices, and would like to submit them to these pages, please contact Tina Vickery.
