They Are Off For Training Quarters

Five Humboldt County Boys Leave For Front Tuesday

They Go To D'Moines

First Government Call Instructed Selection of Men Who had had Military Training.

Humboldt County's first war draft left Wednesday morning for Des Moines where they will take their final examinations and be assigned to their positions.  They are:
John Edge,
Floyd Sheldon,
Cecil Simmons,
Harry Spohn,
August Dunn.
John Edge has applied for entrance to the army before and has been rejected by the examining officers.  However, he passed the local physicians though he may not get through the army examinations.
There is a touch of pathos, of pride and glory in this calling of the first draft quota to the defense of the nation.  To be the first to go is a distinction and an honor that can not be dimmed by breaking of home ties.  The selection of these young men who were called because of their fitness regardless of their place in the draft, is an added honor.
Men well posted on the war conditions do not feel that these young men will ever see service in the trenches, though anything is possible in human combat such as is being waged on the fields of Europe.  But if they do meet the foe we know that they will give a good account of themselves, just as good an account as they will give in camp life, and as they have given in civil life.
Hats off to the boys who are marching.

List Selected By The District Board

Certified Back To Humboldt County Board

Certified By Board

Five Already in First Draft -- Called for Special Training -- For Non-Commissioned Officers.

The list of those certified back by the district board is given herewith.  These men have but one more examination before becoming soldiers of the republic, and that is the physical examination at army headquarters.  They may be rejected by failing to pass this test.
Of course this does not mean that those who are not named here have been rejected.  Their cases will be passed on later.
Those who are marked with an asterisk in this list have already been called to the camps.  They were chosen because of military experience, and it is reported from Des Moines that they will be trained for positions as non-commissioned officers.
