Walter
Schluter was born in Ribe, Denmark on August 17, 1882. He arrived on Ellis
Island in 1910 with his friend, Tony Nissen. Walter and Tony opened a meat
market and general store in Rutland in 1912.

Walter apparently bought Tony out and continued the mercantile
operation. He also bought crates of eggs from area farmers and
sold them to a wholesaler in Laurens, Iowa. Live chickens were
also purchased and were housed in another building he owned.
Walter was a successful businessman.
In the late 1930's the Schluters and Marie and Oscar Holden
purchased the elevator from Thomas Ferris, and the business became
incorporated. Walter died in 1961 at the age of 79.
Fannie Hansen Schluter was born on a farm three northeast of
Rutland. Her grandfather, William Hansen, purchased the land
in 1878. The farm has remained in the family since then and
now has the designation of being a "Century Farm." Presently,
it is owned by Miles Holden, a cousin of Fannie's. Miles lives in
Humboldt and is is 85 years of age. Fannie was a
schoolteacher.
Dee Schluter was born January 2, 1922. She married Don Adams
and they lived on one of the family farms after WWII. Then
they moved to California where they owned a garden center.
After retirement the moved to Peoria, Arizona. Dee and Don
were both killed in an auto accident. Dee was 72 at the time of her
death.
The wee one on dad's knee is Walter "Bud" Schluter. Bud is a retired
graphic artist and lives in Minnesota.
I am extremely grateful to Bud for sharing his memories and photos for the
Rutland Township section of the Humboldt County History Project.
