NEW HAMPTON, IA — Lynford Wendt, 73, New Hampton, IA, died peacefully Wednesday evening, Dec. 18, in his room at the New Hampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his wife and children. Lyndford John Wendt was born May 23, 1929 in Frederika and graduated in 1947. He joined the United States Navy on December 21,1948 as a Boatswain's Mate Third Class. He served aboard the USS Helena, received a Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged on November 21, 1952. On September 19, i954 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Frederika, he married Betty Kuriger. After their marriage, Lynford worked briefly at the Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo. The couple farmed three miles north of Frederika where their four children were born and raised. In early 1996 he retired from farming clue to illness and the couple moved to New Hampton. Lynford became a resident of the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on February 26, 1998 where he lived until his death. Lynford's main hobby was the time he spent farming. He also enjoyed farm sales and the traveling he did with Betty in their later years. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed and married. He was a loving and strict father and will be deeply missed by his family.

Funeral Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 21 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Fredericka with Rev. Kathy Armstrong officiating. Music for the service was provided by Edith Kolthoff as organist. The congregation canv "Amazing Grace", "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "How Great Thou Art".

Burial was at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemtery with full Military Honors by Brandenberg-Kruger VFW Post #4103, Tripoli. Pallbearers were Christopher Wurzer, Matthew Wurzer, Shawn Wulzer, Steve Lantow, Jason Hendries and Bryan Schulmeister.

Visitation was from 3 to 8 Friday, Dec. 20 at Hugeback Funeral Home in New Hampton, where a 7:00 p.m. Video Memorial Tribute was held.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Betty; one son, Larry Wendt (Lanette) of Waverly; three daughters; Linda Wurzer (Dale); Lorna Hyde (Patrick) all of Sumner and Lesa Venem (Roger) of New Hampton; eight grandchildren, three step-gran-children, two great grandchildren, and three step-great grandchildren, two brothers; Laverne Wendt of New Hampton and Harley Wendt (Margaret) of Fredericksburg.

Preceding him in death were his parents.
