Werner, Helen E. nee Martin 1909 - 2002

Helen E. Werner, 93, of Independence, Iowa, died on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at her home following a long illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Sat., Sept. 14, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa, with Fr. A1 Vorwald officiating.

Helen E. Werner was born on August 13, 1909, in Stanley, Iowa, the daughter of Albert William and Adelaide Anna Henning Martin, Sr. She attended the Buchanan County country schools. On February 26, 1930, she and William Henry Werner were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont, Iowa. They farmed northeast of Aurora before moving to Independence. Mrs. Werner also was a nurse’s aide at the Mental Health Institute in Independence for 13 years before retiring in 1976. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence and the St. John’s Rosary Society. She enjoyed time spent playing cards, traveling, gardening, and collecting and dressing dolls.

Helen is survived by four daughters, Marilyn (Mrs. Marion) Wyant of Riceville, Iowa, Darlene (Mrs. Leon) Schweitzer of Winthrop, Iowa, Jeanne (Mrs. Ray) Fuller of Marion, Iowa, and Linda (Mrs. James) Roudabush of Hanover Park, 111. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, one special great nephew, Ted Martin of Independence,, and one special friend, Linda Hanna of Independence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1979, one son, William J. Werner, five sisters, four brothers, and one great-grandson.
