Skar, Robert D. 1915 - 2002

WABASHA, MN - Robert D. Skar, 87, Wabasha, MN, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center, Wabasha, MN.

Memorial Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30 . at United Methodist Church, Pepin with Pastors Kennedy Annor and Frank Kuhlman officiating. Music was provided by Howard Larson as soloist and Barbara Winberg as organist.

Burial of the cremated remains was in Oakwood Cemetery, Pepin.

Goodwin Funeral Home, Durand, WI was in charge of arrangements.

Robert was born March 11, 1915 in Alma, WI, the son of Robert and Grace Ehing Skar. He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1937 and began his printing career a t the New Hampton Tribune. He married Jean Ripple on May 3, 1940 in New Hampton. The couple lived in New Hampton and Northfield MN until ,1940 when they moved to Rochester, MN where Robert was employed as a linotype operator at the Rochester Post Bulletin. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp in 1942 and they moved to Fort Worth, TX. In 1944 they returned to Rochester where Bob worked at the Rochester Post Bulletin for 40 years until his retirement. Bob was instrumental in the establishment of the Olmsted County Community Hospital in 1955 where he served as a board member for 21 years. The couple moved to Deer Island in the early 1980’s, then rural Stockholm, and later to Wabasha.

Survivors include one sister, Helen Roberts, West Chester, OH; one sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law, 12 nieces and nephews; 18 grand-nieces and nephews and one great- grandnephew.

Preceding him in death were his parents.
