NEW HAMPTON - Joseph A. O'Neil, 83, formerly of Morse, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at his home in New Hampton following a sudden illness.

A Funeral Mass will be 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at St. Mary's Church, Iowa City with Father Joseph Phung officiating.

Burial will be in St. Bridget's Cemetery in Nolan Settlement:

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 at Lensing Funeral Home, Iowa City where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.

Joe was born March 20, 1919 in Johnson County, the son of Andrew C. and Ella Beecher O'Neil. He graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Iowa City. He married Mary Roberta Waldschmidt on Nov. 18, 1941. She died April 6, 1959. He married Gertrude McGrath Sept. 3, 1959. She died Nov. 13, 1992. He worked as a carpenter for Viggo Jensen Co. and Red Ball Engineering for many years. He also raised championship Jersey cattle for over 50 years. He lived in New Hampton the past eight years. He was a member of the Iowa Jersey Association, the National Brotherhood of Carpenters Local #1260, the Morse Communitv Club and St- Mary's Catholic Church, New Hampton.

Survivors include nine children, Joan (Joe) Kaipo, Tulsa, OK, Joyce (Edmund) Harney and Jean (Patrick) Harney, all of Iowa City, Roberta John) Stiles, Lewiston, MN, Ron O'Neil and his wife Jackie Nemecek, Solon, Coleen (John) Reynolds, Peoria, AZ, Terry, (Glends) O'Neil and Denny (Monica) O'Neill, all of West Branch and Marlene (Steve) Otte, North English; 22 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and a sister, Mary Eileen Scheetz, Iowa City;

Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister and two brothers.
