NEW HAMPTON - Dale W. Lewis, 85, New Hampton, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002 at his daughter's home in rural Elma; of cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt presiding. The pall was placed on the casket by grandchildren Dustin Lewis, Jon Freidhof, Megan Walton, Rachel O'Don-.nell, T.J. O'Donnell and Ben Freidhof. Lector was Roscoe McDonald. The offertory gifts were presented by grandchildren Jenessa Friedhof, Jocelyn Lewis, Molly O'Donnell and Jennifer Lewis. Ann Bennett was organist accompanying the St. Mary's Choir.

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Hampton with nephews Ron Leichtman, Tom Schwickerath, John Schueller, Mike Weigel, Bob Weigel and Jim Schwickerath as pallbearers.

Visitation was from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10 at Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton, with a 4 p.m. Rosary, a 7 p.m. Scripture Service and 7:30 p.m. Video Memorial Tribute.

Dale was born in rural Chickasaw County on Aug. 22, 1916, the son of Watson and Minnie (Schnurstein) Lewis. He attended rural country schools in Chickasaw County and was a 1935 graduate of Fredericksburg High School. From the time of graduation until his military service, Dale did various jobs throughout the midwest. Dale enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 10,1941 at Ft. Snelling, Minneapolis. He served as a Supply.,technician in the Aleutian Islands. Dale received the Good Conduct Medal, an American Defense Service Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal. He received his Honorable Discharge on Oct. 14, 1945. On Nov. 25, 1947 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Hampton he married Genevieve Schueller. They lived in the New Hampton and North Washington area their entire married life. Dale worked as a linoleum installer and carpenter for a local store and later for Kout Construction. He joined Stoltz Construction Co. where he remained for over 30 years, retiring in 1980. Dale enjoyed helping his children in various remodeling projects at their homes, going to auctions and sales and continued to add to his collection of over 1,300 salt and pepper shakers and over 50 clocks. He also enjoyed canning and cooking, as well as watching the Food Channel.

Survivors include two sons, Tim (Rochelle) Lewis, Charles City and Jim (Lisa) Lewis, New Hampton; two daughters, Linda (Ron) O'Donnell, Elma and Cindi (Dave) Freidhof, Owen, WI; ten grandchildren; one great-granachild; six sisters-in-law, Clara Lewis, Kentucky, Henrietta Elenz, North Washington, Marie Leichtman, Claudia Schueller, Dolly {Virgil) Schwickerath and Kathleen (Lavern) Hilsman, all of New Hampton.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Genevieve, in 1990; a grandson, John O'Donnell; two grandchildren in infancy; four brothers, Clarence, Lloyd, his twin brother Don and Elmer Lewis and three sisters, Ellen Churchill, Esther Buhr and Nora Hunt.
