Herman J. Kuennen, age 86 of St. Lucas, Iowa died on Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at his home surrounded by his family.

Herman Joseph Kuennen was born on September 7, 1915 the son of John and Theresia (Martin) Kuennen.    On September 4, 1940, Herman married Clotiel Frana at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Herman and Clotiel worked on the family farm until his retirement in 1973, they then moved to a site on the farm where they lived until his death. Herman was the last surviving' member of his family of thirteen children. He was an avid baseball player and fan and continued his love of the game by umpiring for many years. Herman was a member of the steering committee for the formation of the Turkey Valley Community School District and served * as the first Turkey Valley School Board President. He was active in his community and served on the St. Lucas city council. He was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of the Foresters and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed listening to the birds and watching the squirrels from his porch. He was always ready to play cards, visit his children and grandchildren and to cheer on the "Cubbies".

Herman's survivors include his wife: Clotiel Kuennen, St. Lucas, IA. Seven children: Louis Kuennen & wife Bette, Libby, MT; Rosemary Most & husband Carl, Rochester, MN; Samuel Kuennen & wife Theresa, Albuquerque, NM; Daniel Kuennen & wife Kathryn, St. Lucas, IA; Jennifer Reicks, Des Moines, IA; Diane McCarty & husband John, Cedar Falls, IA and Marie Schneberger & husband Dean, Calmar, and Diane McCarty. Twenty-four grandchildren: Mike, Matthew, Jason, Sarah, Kristin, Samantha, Steven, Christopher, Brenden, Eric and Nathan Kuennen, Markus & Monique Most, Jennessa, Joshua & Joel Reicks, Michael & Bryan McCarty, Jamie, Russell    &    Candice Schneberger, Nicole Wallem, Kathleen Walker and Brian Calame.  Six great-grandchildren:    Kendra    & Devin Kuennen;    Amanda    & Trevor Brown; Devyn Wallem and Madison Walker.

Herman was preceded in death by his two children: Randolph and Judith; granddaughter:    Jill Reicks; parents: John and Theresia Kuennen; six brothers: Carl, Ed, Clem, Leo, Aloysius and Connie Kuennen; six sisters: Barbara, Elizabeth, Teresa, Sr. Rosaria, FSPA, Clementine and Melania.

The family plans on creating a scholarship fund at the Turkey Valley School in Herman's name.
